Anyone used Thunder Monster baffles?
« on: November 05, 2006, 07:03:48 PM »

I have a 2005 Fat Boy SE with Samson,Rip Saws, exhaust. It is very loud and I would like to quiet it down just a little.

Tom:

Haven't used the TMs lately, but had them in an '03 Wide Glide and the Son's '04 BB Deuce.

My pipes didn't come with baffles. They are strictly drag pipes. I don't want to add quiet type baffles and have to re-tune, since my bike runs good now.
I do like the sound of a healthy exhaust, but my present setup is way too loud.
Thunder advertises that if you already have your bike dialed in for pipes without baffles, you can add their baffle without having to re-tune.
Although the intent of the Thunder Monster baffles is to give back a bit of low end power and not a sound decreasing baffle, I was thinking using them may quiet my exhaust a hair more than having nothing at all to restrict the exhaust flow in the pipes.
I am just trying to bring the exhaust sound down a little.

Will gain some low end tourqe but will not be any quieter. These are not baffles. Just a big washer on a bracket. Would be the same as putting in a bolt. Did a dyno run with TMs without them was a loss of 7lbs of tourge on 03 se deuce. Could not notice any sound differance. Hope this helps.

I found the answer to toning down a bit without losing anything.  I will look up part number and post shortly. I installed these additional baffles in the front section of my Rineharts and it did the trick.

OK, I just remembered.  They were KHROME WERKS HP PLUS Baffles.  They are in the JPCycles online catalog.  Look under Exhaust and go to Khrome Werks.  They worked great for me in taking the noise down a notch while actually adding low end torque on my 06 SE Ultra running Rineharts.

The unit is really not so much of a baffle as it is a redirector of the exhaust noise.  Check out the sizes on J&P Cyles site to be sure they will fit.  I installed them in the front section of my Rineharts which were a larger diameter than the stock diameter.  They make several different sizes and they don't have to fit air tight.

I already bought a set of copper pipe reducers 1-1/2" to 1" and will install them in the end of my pipes this week. If the reducers don't help in lowering the exhaust a tad more,  I will order the KHROME WERKS HP PLUS Baffles from J&P. They show a pair for my 1-3/4" OD pipes.
My 103 CI ran great with no baffles at all, just power cones at the head end.
The stuff I am installing is suppose to add more low to mid range power, due to adding some back pressure. Seat of the pants wise, I don't currently have any power problems just excessively loud exhaust. I am just trying to put something in the exhaust path that will not cost me power and hopefully will lower the sound level just a bit from extremely loud  to loud.
I am a bit concerned with losing power and screwing up my air/fuel ratio by adding more restriction to the exhaust than my motor is currently dialed in for.
Did your motor run good and was just a bit too loud before you added these baffles?
