Made it home with the Bushtec
« on: March 19, 2012, 10:38:07 PM »

I'm sure some of you have had the same kind of day.

6AM get to work, Bushtec guy calls tells me he is 7 hours out of Atlanta, great I am close to 3 so if I leave work by 9:00 we can hook up.

7:00 AM Another call from Bushtec, they want to meet North of Atlanta so they can blast through the traffic, no problem.  We decide to meet at Cartersville Harley Davidson around 3:00.

9:00 AM start to leave and get waylaid by my estimator, blew 1/2 hour but thats OK Cartersville is only 2 hours from home.

9:45 AM head for the house to get the wife and bike.

10:30 Am check the fluids and air in the tires, checking the air both tires need a few pounds, done.

10:45 AM rolling out.  Something feels strange though as we head down the road the rear of the bike starts to shake like crazy, turn around and head home, pull in driveway rear tire goes flat.

Fire up the compressor pull the cap off the valve stem and air it back up and check for leaks.  No leaks, put cap back on valve stem and a hissing noise arises.  Seems the custom chrome cap when tightened down hits the stem and creates a small leak.  Pull cap, small rubber seal in cap missing letting cap screw on to far and deflating the tire.  Re inflate and put on ugly black rubber cap that does not deflate the tire.

11:15 AM Off we go again after changing T shirts, hot out sweated like a pig during the tire issue.

60 miles north of home we are enjoying the warm breeze and loving the roar of the pipes.  Happen to notice a SUV coming towards us a a high rate of speed, I am running 70 on a 2 lane road too.  Suddenly  I notice the SUV cross the centerlane and damn its coming right at us.  I move over just as it gets to us and the mirror passes within a foot of the batwing, driver was either texing or dialing a cell phone and I am about to crap . Terri is not paying a bit of attention just enjoying the view to her left.  Once my heart stops racing I ask Terri what she thought about the SUV, didn't see it she said glad I did.

The rest of the trip goes great, we arrive at Cartersville in plenty of time, say 2 hours early.  I call the Bushtec guy and he tells me by the way we are in Lakeland should be there at 3:30 0r 4.  No problem we will get lunch and mess around.

2:30 PM lunch over back at dealer what the hell let them change the oil we have time to kill.

4:00 PM oil change done Bushtec guy calls tells me they are 30 miles away get ready.

4:05 PM Bushtec calls truck broke down, blew the rear end, they are getting a motel can we meet them at the breakdown site.  No problem we head south on I 75 to meet them.

get to the Bushtec breakdown site unload and hook up trailer I ask the guy where is the female end for the wire harness so I can hook up my lights.  On the semi headed back through the Carolinas, sorry the corporate guy failed to tell me you needed it.  No problem, send me one I will try to get home by dark.. NOT

5:15 PM head for Alabama, plenty of sunshine but have to be carefull no trailer lights.  Trip home goes well until we get about 12 miles from home a lady in a Impala with the windows down fails to hear my pipes and starts to come into my lane.  I lay on the horn and she darts back into her lane and gives me a dirty look for being on the road, pisses me off.

8:00 PM stop for gas and take a photo of the set up since it is way dark now.

Here it is, will post a better shot when I can..

Weird on the valve stem cap thing.  Had never seen that before but had exactly the same thing last weekend.  Checked tire pressure on all three bikes and walked through a half hour later to find the front on the Road Glide flat.  Little o-ring inside the valve cover pushing on the valve stem.

Congrats on concluding a trip that was hairier than it should have been.  Enjoy the new rig!

Congrats Chains, on living thru that escapade.  Too many 'close calls' for me, but maybe that's all for you for awhile.  ;) spyder

Yeah, I see what you mean by the black rubber cap. Real ugly!

Congrats on the Bushtec.

Glad you made it through that frustating day! Your dues for the year are paid in full and then some. Did you look to see if your bell is still attached? :2vrolijk_21:

Chains - here to hoping all the rest of the trailer trips will be uneventful.

Now if Don only would have accepted my original offer I would have a matching trailer too

Thinking of a larger bell after yesterday, which one do you think would work the best.  Nice that they are chromed too.   :nervous:
