Automatic Primary Chain Adjuster
« on: October 11, 2010, 03:27:02 PM »

I actually broke down and rode my bike some yesterday. I know, I know it's hard to believe.

Last time out with her I had thought that there was an unusual amount of handlebar vibration at idle and at lower speeds. Upon returning from my ride Otis and I pulled the primary apart to install an automatic adjuster on the primary chain.
When we took the cover off the chain appeared to be adjusted properly, so much so that neither of us thought that the new adjuster would make much difference.

When we took her off the lift and started her the change was immediately apparent. The handlebars shook less and the ride is much more enjoyable.

If any of you are still running the original tensioner on your SEEG do yourself a favor and change over to the new automatic job. You won't be sorry.

Regards

That is probably a good idea, I'm going into the primary to replace the stator and I about fell over at the gasket price, over $30 for the outer primary gasket.  So, $100ish for the tensioner isn't bad.

The Mo Co seems to really charge for certain maintenance items.  The fuel filter was another.....

The autotensioner relatively recently went to a "B" revision on its part number.  Anyone have a clue what changed?

If you ride hard baker says this is not a good idea because it put alot of tension on the output shaft on the crank and the imput on the tranny. Their only reasoning is once the chain is loaded real hard like pulling a wheelie or a hole shot it will go to the next tooth on the tensioner and will not release I only know this by harley putting in two trannies under warranty and so I removed this tensioner and still have the last harley  tranny and 32k miles later no problem so think about it. It does make sense

But that is one gasket you can reuse, more then once, or twice ......

I have a Baker, and I have asked several times - "why not an auto tensioner". The only answer I ever got was we don't recommend it - never a "here is why"

I don't have an automatic tensioner, so I guess I'll be the guinea pig and start doing wheelies and burnouts at every opportunity, fully expecting my SE 6-speed to love every minute of it in hopes of proving Baker's point that it's all the tensioner's fault when transmissions fail due to abusive riding. ::)

I have the HD version of the auto tensioner. From the first ride I though it shifted better and with less clunking. And then there is the issue of not having to adjust the chain (not really that big of a deal).

But with the Baker DD6 it is not recommended, and I never received a reason why. I am not thrilled about the way my trans shifts between 1-2 and 2-3. So before I pull the gear set out and send it to Baker over the winter I decided to put the Baker recommended tensioner in. This a Baker supplied sllde that attaches to factory brackets.

Did that yesterday (and reused the gaskets). Will see how it goes.

Just a piece of info for those considering at least the HD tensioner - there is some give with the way the unit works.

Although the spring loaded wedge moves in between two ramps and locks, it is still spring loaded and allows some flex in the chain.
I rode the bike pretty hard during the MV trip and when I pulled the cover off yesterday the wedge looked to be close to where I last saw it and and there was suffcient flex in the chain.
