Title: One Off FLHRSEI Tour Pak
Post by: Twolanerider on May 10, 2017, 11:35:39 PM
Picked up all the parts from the painter last weekend.  Had time to the reassembly tonight.  Had been all mocked up before paint so was just a cautious reassembly.  Still not 100% done.  Have to crimp up the terminals for a Deutsch connector to tie the pak's harness to the harness I made for the bike and have to pick up some type of USB charger to run off the extra leads I left hot inside the tour pak.  Later will somehow carpet or line the interior also.  But it's damn near done.

By bits and pieces it's been awhile in the making so was afraid time would have me miss some detail.  In the end I'm a happy camper.  Very pleased with the result.  The paint is just gorgeous and the color matches are spot on.  Multi stage candy brandywine can't be an easy match.  Way beyond my skills.

The bare pak itself is the 2014 up style (I like that hardware better) and it's the razor sized from an aftermarket company called The Fairing Factory.  Very nice ABS piece.  All the holes for the hardware were perfect. Only drilling I had to do were for my own accessories adding the spoiler, windshield bag, the old style tether and a place to drop the wires.

Oh yeah, and the mounting holes of course.  Mounted it on the old pre-2004 style detachable rack and wanted it in the solo style position.  None of that matched the 2014 and up style pack so had to re-work the base a bit and build some spacer to get it set at an angle I liked.  Overall finished up very well though; at least to me.

Painter did a great job laying out the flames to match the original paint.  I left him a spare saddlebag lid to work from but he followed the lines from the tank back also.  There are way more color matches going on there than you see in one or two looks.

This is a detail I really like.  Had a great vendor called Master Lugos rework my saddle fall before last at BBBQ in Fayetteville.  The reason I wanted to use the very old style detachable rack was that it worked with these leather covers that only came on the 2000 and 2001 CVO Road Glides.  I had a spare set of the covers so had Lugos re-sew my spare set of covers to have them match what he'd done to the seat the year before.  Finally now really get to see it all tied together.

Oops, an even better look of the tour pak rack's side covers and the seat in combination.

Since the tour pak was to be mounted solo and behind the Corbin seat that had its own backrest there was zero use for any style of Harley backrest pad.  Didn't want just dead space either so used a windshield bag from the 95th anniversary bikes.  It was primarily for Springers but the 95th anniversary dark red matches the leather in footboard fringe and the saddle and the other windshield bag that is actually on the windshield.

That's all.  One last long look (at least until better pics can get taken outside).

Looks awesome and I love the look of the leather trim and windshield bag.  Unique and not just like everyone else's.

For the USB charger you could hook up a "Battery Tender style charging pigtail to the wires in the tour pak (about $7.95) and then plug a "Battery Tender" brand USB plug (about $12.95) into it.  You could do most of that underneath whatever mat or carpet you put in it and just have a USB connection instead of worrying about getting a cig lighter style adapter.  That's what I do to my bikes nowdays inside the fairing or within the triple tree area (depends on the bike).

That's what I was thinking about too.  In the other bike I've got a Powerlet plug back there since that plug exists elsewhere on the bike for the tender and I've several of their adapters.  That same socket is on this bike for the tender but have pretty well decided just a USB port back there is absolutely enough anymore.

Thanks.  Very much.  Did just think of one thing forgot to do.  Need to remove the windshield bag and lay down a piece of that clear paint protection plastic stuff so the bag doesn't eventually rub it dull.

very nice result and congrats to your painter.

on my old Ultra, i used FF extended saddlebags. They neded some prep but the result was nice.

Don't dislike the extended bags but mine were the stockers to begin with. Fortunately that was an extra set of parts I didn't have to buy.  Starting from scratch tough I'd go that way.
