American Chopper is being revived by Discovery Channel
After five years off the air, Discovery Channel is reviving the iconic motorcycle-construction reality series American Chopper.
The famously feuding father-son team of Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Teutul Jr. are back on board as the show’s bike-building craftsmen.
In the new show, the duo “set out reclaim their preeminent bike brands and – hopefully, rebuild some sort of relationship … with A-list celebrities, world famous athletes and Forbes 100 businesses as clients, millions of dollars and their brands’ reputations are on the line with every signature build.”
An update on the duo from Discovery: “The Teutuls have been on a wild ride, and it certainly isn’t ending anytime soon. Paul Sr. has revamped Orange County Choppers – turning it into a complex with a shop, café, bowling alley, restaurant and of course, the showroom – but all that didn’t come without a hefty price tag and he is feeling the burden of a high overhead and a lack of foot traffic. Meanwhile, Paul Jr. has also felt the sting of a rough economy – with his business built solely on high-dollar custom-builds and commissions becoming tougher to come by, Paul Jr. stresses about the long-term stability of his own shop, Paul Jr. Designs especially now that he has his own family.”
“American Chopper was one of Discovery’s most popular series ever,” said Rich Ross, Group President of Discovery. “Everyone is eager to see what the Teutul family has been up to. This winter, you’ll find out.”
The original American Chopper premiered as a special in 2002 and ran for 10 years, airing 223 episodes before being cancelled in 2010 and then was rebooted as the spinoff American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior for another two years.
One of Discovery’s most popular programs, American Chopper averaged 3.4 million viewers at its peak. The show also helped pioneer the “docusoap” reality genre making way for shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Real Housewives of Orange County, plus inspired a surge of gear-head reality shows. The series has a simple format — a father and son building custom motorcycles amid frequent infighting. Yet nothing about the show’s colorful history has been straightforward. American Chopper has changed networks, switched names and was even previously canceled once before.

I did enjoy Paul Jr and Vinny building bikes, but that's about it.
Didn't Mikey go to rehab?

I enjoyed the original show, mostly for the craftsmanship. However, the chopper thing has run its course - they built choppers when that was the cool thing, but now you cant give one away. Much of what they built on TV was promotional bikes for corporations. Pretty sure that ship has sailed too. Perhaps they can built an oil pump for the M8.

I didn't watch the first go around and don't anticipate doing so in take two. If I wanted to see families bicker and fight, I'd just go to my father's side family reunions.... ;D

I'm looking to S&S to come out with a M8 oil pump.
As far as shows go, the only builder I'm interested in watching is Joe Martin. Gobs of talent and little drama.

I like Joe as well. As for the other crew I would call it what it is but I don't talk like that anymore!

Fat tire choppers...not interested. They loose resale value faster than a new Harley. All those shows are the same. They are ok at first when the actually show some of the building process. Then they switch to nothing but drama.

My sentiments exactly. Their ship sailed a long time ago and left them behind.

I did like watching the building in the show and had a laugh at the demolition moments. Mikey brought off the wall humour to it. Jr has some good talent but acts like a spoilt kid stomping around and throwing his toys out of the pram when he didn't get his own way. Even the wife liked a lot of the builds.
Anyway it'll be a year or two before it's aired on this side of the pond.

True story...one year in Sturgis mid-2000s I saw Mikey and Vinny riding around town on mopeds.

it would be nice if they built motorcycles made to be ridden.
discuss suspension, frames, and performance and what combinations make for a touring bike vs a sport bike....
do some custom innovations that would have some actual benefit to the rider.

That is a great suggestion. My guess is what they will do instead is wrap Vinnie in duct tape & put him on a piece of plywood & drag him through town behind Srs. brand new pickup truck (covered in maple syrup & duck feathers) with Jr. driving while Mikey throws M&Ms from the back of the pickup that Vinnie tries to catch in his mouth. It's almost the same thing, only different.
