Title: No start
Post by: ultra13 on January 30, 2018, 06:36:40 PM
Did some maint. over the winter on my '13 Ultra. Mild engine work plus some add-ons. Had the tank and console off to get to the rockers. Put it back together and now it won't start in NEUTRAL without the clutch lever in. With the key on, in NEUTRAL and run switch to RUN it won't start. Once I pull the clutch in it starts. Damndist thing I ever saw. Seems that everyone in forums and you tube have the problem of "Won't start in gear with the clutch in".  Going to play with some wires tonight to see what happens....Anyone had this problem?

Your issue is opposite of what we normally hear, which is the one about not starting in gear even with the clutch lever pulled in.  That one is related to a damaged or bad clutch switch located at the lever.  If I read it right, yours won't start with the trans in neutral unless you pull the clutch in.  That sounds like a neutral switch problem, such that the bike doesn't know the trans is actually in neutral.  Does the neutral light illuminate?

yes, I do have a N light. I unplugged the leads on the neutral switch and the light went out, reconnected and the light came back on.

Appears that you are in neutral, so what happens if you release the clutch after starting?

It is as a normal start when clutch is released.

Well, I went thru all the connectors again, didn't find anything out of sorts and it now starts up normal. Heck...Who knows???   lol
