86 mini restoration
« on: December 03, 2017, 11:08:07 AM »

Got a project going on restoring this old mini. Pulled the drive shafts out today and the motor is loose ready to be pulled. All the wiring is out and the inner is gutted. The body will be going off to be bead blasted, not sure when that happens,
Will post pics as things progress

Great cars, a guy I went to high school with used to drive his mothers 1962 to school once in a while, cool car.  His father drove a Morgan.

Cannot wait to follow the progress.

Good deal, Pete.  I've always been a Mini and MINI fan.  There's a guy here in Oak Ridge that tools around in a Mini along with a Moke.  I've talked with him a couple times and he's got a basement full of Mini projects, parts, etc.  He's asked me over to see but I've not taken him up on it...I need to.  I've had my 2005 second generation MINI for 10 years now and still enjoy it as much as I did when I first took ownership as second owner.  There's just something about them and a blast to drive.

Good luck on this project and looking forward to seeing your progress, sir.

I'm sure that you're up to date on blasting of bodies, but I do have a thought.

I know that sand blasting can warp large flat panels like door skins, roofs, hoods etc, but not sure if bead blasting is in the same category as sand blasting.  I lot of blasting here is done with powdered soda which does not warp large flat panels and is totally green and can just be flushed with water down sewer drains.  Another blasting media is ground up walnut/chestnut shells.

I'm sure it will turn out great.

AND, it's just the right size to fit in your newly remodeled work area.

Thanks Howard, I've heard about a Mini club forum I'll be getting in touch with are a few fans over here.

Got things stripped down and repair overhaul kits on order.
Going to have a lot more ordering to do before it's done.
Check out the colour of the oil that came out of the clutch master cylinder, slave and brake  :'(

If that is an example of what helps you restore a mini, I may be in the market for a mini.
