Trade for new 18 cvo street glide?
« on: December 23, 2017, 12:17:33 PM »

Looking to buy the new 18 cvo street glide. I have a 2011 green cvo street glide with 10,000 miles and they offered me 18k for it trade.  However they want 40k for the 18 plus $2k freight and setup fees plus tax of the difference. Basically they are telling me I owe 26-28k this doesn’t seem like a good deal at all to me or am I wrong?

$2k for Freight and Setup is complete BS. Go find yourself an MSRP dealer who won't try to gouge you on the backend. If you are going to pay freight, don't pay more than is listed on the Harley website, it's a flat fee to dealers based on model. Setup is where they get real devious. I have seen anything from $295 to $1495. Again, IMHO if it's more than $495 it's a ripoff. Another consideration, if you wait longer, the less you will be - like Sept 2018 .. or go see them on the last day of January when they are motivated to sell.

Best of luck.

i'd never noticed this before until someone pointed it out to me, but dealer setup charges are a ripoff as well, no matter what they charge.  according to their specs page, the moco reimburses the dealer for all pdi done.  so if they charge you, they are getting paid twice for the same work.  quite a racket.

now i've always paid dealer prep as well, but going forward, i'll try like the dickens to get out of it.  course, the only number that matters is the bottom line otd price.  where they put the numbers on the contract is irrelevant as long as i'm happy with the final number.

The $18k trade-in price is representative of current values, so it doesn't look like they're trying to rip you off too much on the trade.  You might want to push the low mileage factor and get them to bump it another grand.

The MSRP for the 2018 is $39949 and freight is $435 per H-D, for a total MSRP of $40384.  Anything in excess of that, not including tax and tags of course, is just the dealer trying to generate even more profit.  Considering the built-in gross profit at MSRP is around $8000, and they will probably ask about $24000 for your trade when they resell it, they already have more than enough profit built in to the deal without trying to rip you off for another $2000.

Find another dealer.

Not sure where u r at, but we have 2 fair dealerships here around Lexington. I traded my 14 last December at Man o war Harley very well to a 17 SGCVO, and got money off. Sales guy was going to let me go visit a competing dealer in Louisville who had the one I wanted and said he didn't know when/if they would get the color I wanted.
Stopped in talked to my buddy just becoming the sales manager, he said hold on, I can find it and get it. In 10 minutes it was on its way. I test road the red, and in another hour made a very satisfying deal on mine not even in the floor.
Now is the time to deal, just find the right dealership no matter the bike or where they are. If the want the deal, they will make it happen

I have been trying the same thing with my 2010 CVO street glide which has a lot of factory accessories added including paint matched king tour pack, lowers with boom audio....etc and the highest trade I have been offered at 5 dealers in the Carolinas is 13000 which is delusional and insane knowing full well they will get 24000 all day long trying to resell it comparing it to all the others I see listed and selling. Trying to sell it myself is the biggest pain in the ass especially this time of year so my only option is trying other states. Or may give up and keep mine forever.

Unfortunately that is the new normal for Harley's, even their most popular models.  They have become just like the auto market, with heavy depreciation the first few years of ownership, and Harley folks who haven't been in the market in the past several years are now getting the shock treatment.  Your case also illustrates what many have been saying for a long time, accessories and modifications don't count for much at trade-in time.

Hope you find a willing buyer soon.  Don't give up, someone out there will appreciate both the bike and your upgrades enough to pay a fair price.

Dealers are also using the current week auction prices to determine trade in values. Many trade in bikes never see the dealer floor and are picked up by wholesalers and taken to the auction.

Nobody wants to be stuck with dead inventory these days.

My guess is $16k maybe a bit more if they were generous and had good margin on the bike your were buying.

double edged sword.  good thing on letting the dealer know you aren't going to play his stupid games, but then there is gonna be that guy that pays that extra 5k and is gonna be riding around on YOUR bike.....

Unfortunately added accessories or parts do not increase the trade in value.  They never have.  The bikes is worth what ever book value is for a 2010 CVO Street Glide is.
I also have 10 CVOSG with 11k miles. No offense the 13000 is the actual cash value. So whatever they give you over is just been discounted of the retail price of the bike you are trying to purchase. Best advice I can give you, keep your bike. Stop buying HD overpriced dinosaurs. Go get a more tech advanced bike for 1/2 the money.
I have other bikes but only one HD left in the stable.

Certainly paying off the house is the 'sensible" thing to do but when did riding any motorcycle be sensible? I have a 12 and a 17 and by no means are they "the same bike"-worlds apart.

Certainly paying off the house is the 'sensible" thing to do but when did riding any motorcycle be sensible? I have a 12 and a 17 and by no means are they "the same bike"-worlds apart.
I fully agree.  I have a 13 and a 18. Very Different.  Suspension is different, motors are different, brakes are different and so on.

Stop buying HD overpriced dinosaurs. Go get a more tech advanced bike for 1/2 the money.
I have other bikes but only one HD left in the stable.

are harley's overpriced?  probably.  but tell me what 'technologically' superior bike i can get, in the same class, for 1/2 the cost?

Compared to to a CVO , well let’s see the the new BMW 1600, The new Honda Goldwing, even not my favorite but the Yamaha new air cooled and the Indian. None cost 40k plus all in the 20k range.

For whatever its worth I rode the BMW and the Yamaha (intend on riding the Honda when I get a chance) and here 9s just my opinion- BMW is just a stripped down GTL and though it certainly has a great motor/performance, it still just doesn't "move me" in any way. If I was looking for a every day driver I would pick it in a heartbeat but thats not what I use a motorcycle for. Yamaha would be a great long distance touring machine as its very comfortable and plush. It does not have great performance and to me felt very sluggish and heavy. I think it will go head to head with the Honda but again long distance is not what I use a motorcycle for.
absolutely no disrespect intended with any of this as it is just my opinion! I personally would love to find a new bike that is not a Harley (why I have been trying those as well as the new Moto Guzzi) but just keep coming back like "Pavlov's dog"..

So, what bike is 1/2 the price of a Street Gilde or road glide?  Not half price, intact costs more.  What bike is half the price of a Street glide Special or road glide special? About 2K more, but not half price. Lets move up to the 42K CVO road glide or CVO Limited.  Answer none.  Seems the BMW is over 24K or more, which is more than 1/2 price the CVO.  The Gold wing is 24K.  Indians for touring are 23K and up, again not half price.  Heck there version of CVO is 34K.

I am an Aprilia rider. The Guzzi is nice bike just don’t know if it is my cup of tea. To its defense, I have not looked at it up close nor rode it. The Honda without the Tour Pack has my attention.

Well I ended up trading my 2011 cvo street glide for the 2018 cvo street glide yesterday. I was able to get $20k trade and paid msrp for the 18. I financed 21,500 and the only accessories I got so far was the Vance and Hines full system with x pipe and tuner. My wife wants the tourpak because I had it on my 2011 that dam thing is like $2800 with everything you need wow! Anyways just wanted to give you guys the update! I feel like $20k was decent for my 2011... they let me keep the tour pak and my other accessories... happy new year everyone

If you can’t get MSRP @Santa Fe or Duke City go to Four Corners in Farmington or Durango HD for MSRP pricing.

At Duke City see Mike Buckingham and mention my name , Simon Clement.

Lat weekend I was at 2 dealers in So Cal. Palm Springs had a CVO RG in grey for MSRP plus the stupid "setup fee" which when I gave them crap about it they said they would remove it I wanted it that day but I told them I was just there for a battery in my fob. They were out of the batteries so I rode to El Cajon Harley (in San Diego) and they had a CVO SG in black with the red trim and they were asking 8K over (what I meant to say). This dealer always does this. They are actually the closest dealer to my house and buying a battery for my fob is about all my business I will ever give them!
When I bought my 12 they were the only dealer in CA that had it in stock and that wanted 6K over for it back then and told me if I didn't want to pay them I would have to go to either OR or VA to get one, I texted every dealer in both of those states that night and the dealer in Bend OR responded that they had it. Did the deal with them (Bend) the next day.. 6 months later my brother in law bought his CVO there and last year I bought my SG there.
I guess I owe El Cajon for kinda telling me where the bike was.
I service my bike at Biggs Harley (great dealer!) that is about 60 miles from my house and pretty sure Biggs has made more than the 6K over El Cajon wanted to charge me in 2012 over the years servicing my bikes...
Sorry for the ramble

All good SDCVO we all have our bitter experiences with shady Harley dealerships I am no exception living in central N.C.  H.D. Mo. Co. apparently condones unethical behavior towards their customers. Wanted to mention 2 N.C. H.D. dealers I have had pitiful dealings with in both sales and service hoping to warn others from my misfortune

Found a `15 S.E.S.G 5033 mi. Bike had a color matched tour pack that I wanted at Smokin` Winston Salem, N.C. price was no great deal at retail, but bike that I wanted. Traded in 2 days before  my buying and had been in shop for mandatory H.D. corp. used bike trade in inspection before resale and signed off by a H.D. tech.

Being very mechanical skilled demo ride revealed this CVO had clutch issues, warped ft. brake rotors, no manuals and various other issues during the sales deal. Smokin` shop told no problems found when bike was put in shop after test ride. Bike still under factory H.D. warranty and all concerns very repairable I was not concerned about getting everything resolved at a different dealer.  I interview many N.C. dealerships and got all kinds of hooey A-Z.

Another example of dealer crap MY CVO in shop with Tilley H.D. Salisbury, N.C.  bike still w/factory warranty, they tried to charge me for diagnostics, because "no problem found told again, again... bike at "H.D. specs. & standards".

Unbelievable that most dealers lie so much they believe themselves! Love Harley's, but the above mentioned Gold Wing looks pretty great from my point of view.

I too have experienced the B.S. at both the dealers you mentioned, especially Tilley of Salisbury. Also Down HomeHD,Greensboro H.D.
It is sad that dealers continue to fail at the service level and gouge for bikes when traffic is at an all time low. I can say they both Tilley dealers would not operate this way if a class act like Don Tilley was still with us running the show.

To be fair though El Cajon Harley are complete rip offs, Biggs Harley has given me nothing but world class service even though they have never sold me a bike. Because of my job I can only ride on the weekends but do ride just about every weekend. They know that and will pick up my bike on Monday, do whatever it needs, clean it and make sure it is back and under the cover by Sat morning. If they can't finish whatever they are doing and its not critical they will bring bike back for Sat and then come back on Mon to finish following week. BTW, I live 60 miles from them..

I hate the new “mothership” dealer mentality!  For most people, a Harley is a toy/hobby!  There used to be 2 dealers in my area that were smaller and family owned.....all they wanted was to make a good deal and have repeat business.  Now it’s like a typical car dealer....part of the fun of having a Harley is the community....but, sadly, that’s going by the wayside to f$%* people out of money.  Anything over MSRP is BS/stealing.

I went to a local dealer to look at a gunship gray Road Glide....they wanted $5k over in December.....I just got a text asking if I’m still interested....they may go under MSRP.  Be patient....and firm, you’ll get what you want.

Guys, it’s just a business. They ask over MSRP and if they get it, that’s what the market demand said it was worth. It’s no different then us wanting top dollar for our trades. The reason resale is so low, is because they are blowing out the new bikes. I got a big discount on my 2016 CVO Street glide when I bought it and it still lost a ton of value. My biggest complaint is the quality issues and the dealers not being good enough or caring enough to properly fiix the problems. I just came really close to buying an Indian, but decided to keep my bike for the long haul and upgrade the motor and suspension. At this point, your best bet is to buy what you want and keep it for a long time.

Agreed, that is why I still have 2010 CVO SG 11k Miles. Not wasting any more money on new Old Tech. When we ride no one cares what year your bike is. Remember HD truly was about the lifestyle not anything else.
