Finished basement question
« on: February 11, 2018, 04:48:29 PM »

As long as my plans get approved by the city and my building permit is approved I am going to be finishing my basement, with the help of some friends. My question is attaching the bottom boards of the wall to the floor what are your guys experiences? I have one friend that says to just glue the boards down and another says we should screw them down with concrete screws. They have both finished basements before and this will be my first. Not sure if one way is better then the other, just want to hear if you guys have any comments on one or the other.

Thanks

Depends on if you have hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc.  In California the seal plates have to be bolted.  Might ask the planning dept. what's common in your area?

Make sure you are using pressure treated wood and I would put down some roll roofing cut into 4” strips.  I’d either use a nail gun for that purpose (.22 caliber shells) or masonry nails (you just need a cleat)

We just started finishing our basement also. We installed a vapor barrier and then used a treated 2x4 screwed and glued with tapcon screws and liquid nails all the way around the perimeter. We countersunk the tapcons about 1/2 inch with a bit big enough to get the driver bit in. Once the perimeter was done we made wall sections out of regular lumber that fit on top of the treated 2x4 and the upstairs floor joists and stood them up and nailed them in place.

I was thinking exterior walls.  If you're just doing interior walls this would be overkill.

you can use metal plates top and bottom, glue and nail with a ramset. The studs fit  and can be cut a little short as you can screw the studs to the plates with drywall screws.  I also use metal studs as they are cheaper and very straight. But if you are not use to them wood will work fine. Billy

I do have pressure treated wood for the bottom. Vapor barrier is not needed in my city but I did coat the walls with dry lock. When the city calls me to let me know if the permit is approved I'll ask if there is a certain way they need to be attached to the concrete.  Thanks guys.

It may not be required but it is good practice. Concrete is moist and will dampen the wood plus it allows for some expansion. As others have said, a shot nailer about 32" O.C. No need for pressure treated bottom plate if you use the felt or barrier. In fact, with PT you then have to review which fastener you use to avoid galvanic reaction.
