Newbie CVO rider, Palmdale California
« on: September 15, 2018, 11:52:42 PM »

Hello All-

My name is Leah, and I’m the guardian of a 2016 CVO Ultra. How I got here is interesting. My father always rode when I was growing up. He retired in 2015 and in 2016 bought himself the bike he always wanted, a 2016 CVO Ultra. He had planned to ride it on a 3 month long trip across the country. Before doing so, diabetic neuropathy caught up to him and he lost his leg below the knee.

With it now certain that dad won’t be riding, he asks me if I wanted to store his bike, and I was welcome to ride it if I wanted to. Well, I didn’t even know how to ride a motorcycle, never mind one as huge as this one. So I took the Lee Parks Total Control class and bought myself a Honda Rebel to practice on. I owned it for a year and now have graduated up to the Ultra. I’m 5’2” and 105 LBS so the bike doesn’t suit me at all. But it’s special because it is dads bikes.

I’m an FAA air traffic controller in Palmdale and I’ve been riding it to work about two days per week. It’s literally a road sofa. I’m not sure what the future has in store for me and this bike, because it doesn’t suit me well at all. But in the meantime, I plan to take a few days in early October and ride three or four of the Sierra passes, and then Arizona in mid-October.

I’ve come here to learn, so I’m going to get started! Hope to eventually meet some of you out on the road!

Hi Leah and welcome to the sight. So sorry to hear about your dad's health issues.
Is there a gremlin bell on your dad's bike?
So here is my thought FWIW. Trade his bike for something that suits you like maybe the new Sport Glide Softail or the redesigned Heritage Classic Softail so that you would still be in the Touring world so to speak AND have a bike that suits you better. Then add a personal touch from your dad like the bell from his bike or something similar so that you'll always have a part of him along for the ride wherever you go. OR have him trade his bike for a Trike and buy whatever Harley suits you and go ride together and create all of the memories that you can. Whatever you decide you are on the right path and I'm sure that your dad is very proud of you

Ride on Leah!

Welcome to the board!

You sound like the kind of woman that does what ever she puts here mind to and I just want to tell you that there are options for you.

There's things that can be done to that bike to make it much more comfortable for your size and there are other women on this forum, you size that are or have been riding baggers.....Melanie, up in the bay area (I believe she's 5' tall) comes to mind.  Shorter front end, CVO Street Glide shocks on the rear is going to get the bike lower.  A Corbin Close seat is much narrower on the tongue and moves you forward a couple of inches.  The Harley Touring Pullbacks are 2" taller and 2" back (closer to the rider).  With those three changes, the bike sits lower, the seat is narrower so your legs reach the ground easier and the handlebars are closer to you.  There's also Legend Air shocks that'll lower the bike all the way to the ground when you're stopped.  Maybe Terry (Rooster on this forum) will come along here and tell you about them.....he's also vertically challenged and so he's found the solutions.

Dave & Donna live there by Lancaster and he's a pretty small guy that rides CVO Baggers (Wrongway is his user name on this forum).....he may be along here in a while....he can walk you through those changes.  All I'm saying is that you are riding the Cadillac of Harleys and once you're at the top of the heap everything else is back down hill and there are options for you if your dad really wants you to have this bike.

 Welcome to the family Leah.
Yes, Donna and I are in Lancaster, but what JCZ says is untrue as I am not a small guy, short legs is all. We ride and camp the Sierras all the time to escape the desert heat. If you head up
to Nine Mile Canyon/Kennedy Meadows anytime soon don't plan a through ride as Sherman Pass Road is closed near Fish Creek Campground to through traffic.
I have to lower most of my bikes, and/or change seats to get a better foot plant when stopped. Our latest is a 2014 with only shorter rear shocks as I am very happy with the seat position.
Ride safe and we'll see you out there.

:huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:  Now that's funny right there.  Standing next to 6'4", 220 lbs. you're a small guy, the rest of your body matches your short legs.  It's not an attack Dave, just an observation. Have a great evening.
