First Miles today at last!!!
« on: March 24, 2007, 03:31:19 PM »

Finally got my bike out of the house, and on the road - 137 miles today!   :orange: :orange: :orange:

First impressions - I L-O-V-E it!!! :-)

There are times though when it seems impossible to get it to go into neutral - anyone else find this?  In first and you just ease ever so gently on the pedal, and CLUNK - it goes to second.  So you ease the other way, and CLUNK - it goes to first.  Repeat till you get fed up with it and turn the motor off....

Got the J&M antennae on, and the CB one seems fine, though I've not yet had the time to try the SWR.  The FM one, though, is disappointing.  We live in a hilly area, and it just won't lock on to stations the way the standard whip does.  But it's early days....

Bike is just a dream to ride - so much better than my 06 Haze was.

Glad you are out in the wind.  Odd that the FM would give you trouble, FM doesn't usually seem to need mucvh antenna.

The hills might be the problem I guess.  Enjoy the ride.

Glad to hear your liking your new scooter  :2vrolijk_21:

I find neutral easier using the heel shifter, not sure how you are trying to get in neutral  :nixweiss:
In addition as the the scooter loosens up it will become easier to find neutral   :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks guys!  If felt good to be riding again, first time since October - winter is nearly over, but MAN it was still cold today!   On the way home just as darkness fell, it was heading rapidly towards freezing.

Tomorrow's job is her first wash to get all the salt dust off - roads are still thick with it here....

Jim , glad to hear your finally able to ride that scooter!!!!! I installed a SE 6 speed on my bike 06 seuc the first couple hundred miles n was kind of hard to hit, after that it loosened up. dont know if its the same tranny as a factory 07 or not though, also are you still running sin3? if so you may want to try redline shock proof. keep the shinny side up Randy

It's funny - out on the road, finding neutral is fine, just twice it proved to be near impossible, but yeah, hopefully it'll all come right in a few hundred miles. :-)  I'd love to switch to Red Line, and Mobil 1 V-Twin, but neither of them are available here in the Uk  :-\

Jim,
I get my Redline products from CDOC who are local to me, but do ship (not sure about outside USA). Also PM hd-dude concerning Amsoil (he's a dealer) as an alternative to the Syn3 in the motor. Not sure as for shipping (if it's available/allowed to be shipped outside US) it may get pricey, but worth checking to see if you can get some better fluids in your bike.

Spec for 07  is the same  :2vrolijk_21: and also the primary case  is 38oz   wet fill   and 45oz  if a dry fill..   same as engine oil   or  red line   MTL   is my choice.     I use the shockproof  Heavy in the trans and it is quiet and shifts clean and easy!    Jacques,  I had much trouble shifting and finding neutral as well as  the clutch not releasing.  It  became a big problem and took lots of bleeding as well as a trip to HD  for more secret massaging. Its all fixed. but it progressivly crept in and started as a neutral fishing issue.    just my .02

when I installed the SE 6 speed on my bike, I asked the same question here on this site, I recieved different info on the tranny ei some said 24 oz some said 32 oz. so I was not sure, my solution was to warm the bike up to operating temp, then drain the tranny, and measure in a measuring cup the amount that came out, in my case it was 32 oz, so you might want to check to be sure!!!! Glad to hear that you managed to start riding. Also great that the new bike is running well.

On my FatBoy it is still sometimes difficult to find Neutral but I personally believe it will get easier within miles. Certainly nothing to worry about.

Good luck with changing oil and let us know the result!

All the best!

Jim,
We got out yesterday finally and rode 182 miles, even got a little sun burn in the face.  Have 791 miles on the scoot now, hope to get to the 1,000 mile mark this week so that I can start the mods like exhaust, etc...

Spring is finally around the corner for us Yankees!!!

Hi Jacques.

First wash completed, very  thoroughly - the bike was white with salt all over, in every location!

We've had nice weather for the last few days, but still very cold!

Thanks d00d.  :)  At the risk of starting an oil thread,  :nervous:   does everyone think Amsoil is better than Mobil 1 V-Twin?  I ran ordinary Mobil 1 in my 06, and it was fine. I have to say that I've always been a fan of Mobil synthetics, ever since they supplied it free (then called Mobil SHC) to run in my Rally Car, in the late '70s.

But I want the best, so if Amsoil is better, that'll do for me!

Jim,

I found this bid on ebay for Mobil 1 V Twin 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil, buy it now 9.49$ but Orders that are less than $100 US will be cancelled.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mobil-1-V-Twin-20W-50-Motorcycle-Oil_W0QQitemZ5676846035QQcategoryZ88433QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

What are the reference for the Red Line ?

Jacques

Yes, I saw that one last week, Jacques.   I wish Mobil would sell it in Europe!  Actually I know a guy who gets it in the UK, but - sadly - just enough for himself!  He has an American friend on a USAAF base near to him, and he can buy it on the base.  Wish I could!

Its all fixed. but it progressivly crept in and started as a neutral fishing issue.    just my .02
Gene

Sounds like mine, Gene!  Any idea what the secret massaging involved?

Should I be looking at Red Line Heavy Shockproof Gear Oil, or Red Line Lightweight Shockproof Gear Oil, guys?

Expensive stuff here - $31.50 + shipping per quart.  How much does it cost in the US?

You want the Heavy Duty for Tranny, and MTL for Primary. I don't have receipts handy, but I'm thinking it was under $10/qt.

Hey Jim,  Before I brought it in and actually for me to drive it in, I pumped a whole pint of dot4 thru the system using the hose on nipple bottle bleeding method. There were many very fine bubbles coming up in the master. They claimed they did the same. I brought all the old fluid in to show them as it was grey/black in color. I suspect they pulled the trans cover to inspect/Message  the slave cylinder. The SM said he did see once where the slave seal cup was in backwards. no exact answer was given except that it seems to be working good.  I had to retighten the master cover screws a bit to stop the fluid from leaking  after i got it back.  It has worked good for the last 800 mi.

Jim,
Glad to hear that you finally got out a little.  The new six-speed is a little tricky at first finding neutral, but you'll get used to it, then it doesn't take much at all.  I always put it in neutral when I stop at a traffic light, so I got used to it really quick.  Glad you love the ride...it only gets better.  ;D

It must be the geography and distance from the FM transmitters.  I found that FM reception was actually improved over the stock whips.  But then again, most of the FM stations around me are within 60 miles from me.   But I listen to XM 90% of them time anyway, so my FM antenna is mainly for looks ...  ;)

Geography, yes, though all the transmitters are way less than 60 miles from me, but because it's a small island, I guess their output is low.  I'd rate it about half as good as the stock whip on FM......

On the CB front, I'm going to try the SWR on both the J&M and the stock whip, then try some subjective testing, i.e get a friend to ride off till he can just receive my signal, then swap antennae & see how they differ.

 ;)

Bonsoir Jim,

Today, I've asked my dealer to put Redline or Mobil 1 in my motor (of course, I give him because he had not) for my first inspection.
In this case, he'll avoid the warranty on my motor.
Same for the TM.....

It's really not easy to decide with these guys.

Jacques,
Is that legal in France for your dealer to void your warranty because you're using different oil?   In the states as long as the oil meets or exceeds the factory specs, they cannot void the warranty for using a different oil.  Amazing if they can do that to you.

My bike will run with the best oil : Amsoil or Mobil1V and Redline after the first inspection.

Best regards

Jim,

I've an offer for 5 quarts of Amsoil MCF 20W50 with shipping for approximatly 80$.

What do you think ?

Jacques

If MCF 20W50  is the right stuff, it's good - maybe you'd pay about the same for oil in France, but this way you're getting better stuff.  Did you try PM-ing hd-dude concerning Amsoil (he's a dealer)?

Thanks Randy.

I've pretty well decided I want to go for Mobil 1 VT, Redline Shockproof Heavy, and Redline MTL for the primary.  So I need, I guess, to get it all shipped from the US, and I might as well get enough for my first change at 1000 miles, plus another 10,000 miles worth, to make it worthwhile.  Now I just need to locate a supplier who does all three and will ship to me at a reasonable cost....

Cheers,

I think that it's the right product :

AE 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (MCV)
High Performance Lubricant for Engines, Transmissions and Primary Chaincases
API SG, SL/CF; JASO MA/MA2; API GL-1

AMSOIL Synthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil (MCV) is a premium oil designed for those who demand the absolute best lubrication for their motorcycles. AMSOIL MCV is the result of extensive research, and it is specially formulated to excel in all areas unique to motorcycles, including high temperatures of air-cooled engines such as Harley Davidson® V-Twin, wet clutch lubrication, extreme pressure regions of gears and chains and rust common to short trips and storage.

Other informations : https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/mcv.aspx

I've not PM to hd-dude, I'll made for an offer.

I'll wait your result for Mobil 1V or Amsoil....
I order only a little bit more for my first change at 1000 miles because the next will be not before the end of the year ( End of Autumn or begenning of the Winter).

Because I'll be doing over 5000km to Fuengirola and back, I want enough to give me the first change next year too, but the main thing is I need it in time for the 1500km change...

So, I reckon I need to get:

1 quart of Redline Shockproof heavy, 3 quarts of Redline MTL, and 13 quarts of Mobil 1 VT, to see me past the 10000 mile mark, or:

1 quart of Redline Shockproof heavy, 2 quarts of Redline MTL, and 9 quarts of Mobil 1 VT, to see me past the 5000 mile mark.

I guess I might as well just aim at the 5000 mile quantities, as the 10000 mile service is a year away yet, so that's a total of 12 quarts I'll need to get shipped; anyone know a place that stocks all three, so I can ask if they'd ship internationally?   (Checked out the CDOC site, d00d, but they don't seem to list Mobil 1 VT)

I just use CDOC as my Redline supplier. I use Amsoil in the crankcase and previously got that from my dealer.

Actually, I've found that I CAN get Amsoil MCV in the UK, so now I'm thinking I might try it.  Usual Treasure Island ripoff on price, of course - nearly $26 a quart, plus shipping..... http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/amsoil_harley_davidson.html

Since I read some comments here it raises some questions....First

When you talk about changing oil to Mobil 1 does that include the primary also

And what does the Harley dealers think of this

Keep up the good information :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

Good morning bdas2,

For my bike, it'll Mobil1 V Twin 20W50 or Amsoil MCV for motor, Redline MTL for primary transmission and Redline Heavy Shockproof on gearbox.

Concerning my dealer, read the reply #48.

Best regards

Jim :carrot:

Nice ride :2vrolijk_21:

I was reading your thread and saw about getting into neutral. The gears are real close in there. At first I was trying to gently push down on heal or toe and then I discovered a gentil tap rather than a soft push finds it quicker heal or toe. Try this and let me know if it works for you as well.

Congrats on the new ride :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks IB - I'll try that.  Funny thing is - and this is really bizarre - it only seems to happen outside my garage! I can be out all day, no problem, but get home, stop, and... I can't get neutral!

 :worthless:

 :)

Jim
Sorry they didn't. It was hurting me so bad when it was in I didn't want to ever see it again.

Shame d00d!  You could have had it polished and chromed then used as a fender ornament!  :orange:

How is the new one - are you completely back to fitness?

It's great. :2vrolijk_21: I've finished the out patient physical therapy and going to the gym every day doing my own work outs. I've been back on the bike a few times and feeling really good on that also.

I've ordered 2 quarts of Redline Shockproof heavy and 2 quarts of Redline MTL with shipping : 61.80$
Shipping is with USPS economy parcel post 4 to 6 weeks business days : 26$.

Are you interested for more informations ?

  Jacques

Bonjour Jim,

Today, I received my order. Good packaging and surely good product ! :2vrolijk_21:
Friday, I'm at the dealer for the first inspection.
I've waited three weeks since my call for the inspection.
The first proposal of my dealer was 5 weeks (not before the beginning of May).
I'll ask him to put the Redline in the primary and in the gearbox.

Bonjour Jacques!

Bizarre!!!  My Redline order arrived today as well!   :o

My first inspection is on Saturday - I've done 922 miles (1484km) - so I'll be having the Redline MTL and Shockproof heavy put in then too.

If the weather is good on Sunday, I'll be changing the exhausts, A/C - and installing the TMAT!  :orange:
