Wanted adaptor to convert battery tender pigtail to Gerbing plug
« on: November 04, 2009, 02:19:25 PM »

Many of our bikes already have a battery tender pigtail sticking out of the side of the bike.  Since this is attached directly to the battery can it also be used to power our heated Gerbing gear?  Is the fuse of the battery tender pigtail sufficient for Gerbing gear?   If so, all we need is an adaptor to go between the pigtail and the gerbing plug.

I'd like to keep the number of wires coming out of the side of my bike to a minimum

Yes I have used an adapter pigtail years on mine, unless plugs have changed of late on Gerbing.  You need to find a place that stocks the full Gerbing line of adpaters.  If none near you I know Eagle Leathers Tacoma WA sells the full line of adapters - in fact I got me a 2nd adapter there just last week.    They have website, you can google Eagle Leathers Tacoma Washington, if not shown as parts on line you could call them they are real helpful.  I am not home this week or I would look at the part number I got - let me know if need be I can get pic and part # for you this weekend.

If you plan to power more than one item, you need not only a much bigger fuse, you need the heavier gauge wire to go with it.  A better approach would be to install a real power point for your heated gear, and see if you couldn't get an adapter to let you use your Battery Tender with it instead of the pigtail.  Try looking around this site for ideas, they have products that look good and will work with your battery tender and heated gear as well as many other products:

Many of our bikes already have a battery tender pigtail sticking out of the side of the bike.  Since this is attached directly to the battery can it also be used to power our heated Gerbing gear?

Fused and gauged appropriately yes it could.  Input or output (i.e., from the battery tender or powering the clothes) it's still just a connection to the battery.

Gerbing itself at least used to make an adapter cable for this.  Just looked on their website and didn't see it now though.  Might be worth a call to check further.

Another option is eliminating the little dangly pigtail for the battery tender entirely and going to a conveniently mounted hard point.  A company called Powerlet offers lots of options.  They use the almost ubiquitous BMW type power plug.  Adapters are available for that plug to just about anything so you can use the power point for you tender, clothes, chargers, etc etc etc.

I've got one on both bikes.  There's a relatively convenient mounting hole that works on the baggers and is accessed through the empty area in front of the battery.  The hard point is handy and having the fixed point right under your left legs works well for the heated clothes.

Gerbing did change from an SAE to a coax type plug a few years ago.  But the plug currently in use has been their standard since 03 or 04 (I think that's right).

you guys are really smart!
Answer is either use a gerbing pigtail and get an adaptor for the BT or in the alternative, permanently mount a plug for the Gerbing which could also be used for the BT with an adaptor.  Hard plug sounds good because you only need one hand to plug stuff in.

Thanks for your collective brilliance.

That is a convenience to the hard mount.  The door is spring loaded so self closes.  Weather and bike washes not a problem.  In that location shown you can plug and unplug under your leg from the saddle.  The pigtail that is part of the kit is also a perfect fit to reach the battery.  No cutting or splicing. The company didn't have Harley baggers in mind when they put that kit together.  But the way it fits they might as well have.

need a much bigger fuse for gerbing
  Correct.
Gerbing   15Amp fuse

BT           1.75 0r 3 Amp fuse

I believe however that the Battery Tenders DC wire is a larger gauge (smaller #) than Gergings wire
