Primary Whine
« on: July 28, 2010, 09:39:30 PM »

Bike has 2000 miles on and I recently started hearing my primary whine, especially at idle.  Call the dealer and they said it was probably the air intake.  NOT!!!  It is definitely a noticeable whine in the primary that is very evident at idle.  I put my ear down by the primary and that is definitely where it's coming from.  Could it be my primary chain tensioner?   Any help is appreciated.

Are you having trouble shifting - particularily downshifting?  If so, it's an indicator of possibly having excessive chain tension.  It's fairly easy to check...drain your primary fluid and pull the cover.  Do you have a service manual?

A bad compensator will be noisy (rattle and bang), but not whine.  It certainly could be chain tension.  It's worth a look.

Hard to diagnose noises over the internet, but if it's a true whine and not a "whir" type of noise, could be a bearing.  A tight primary chain usually makes more of a "whirring" noise.  And yes, I know this doesn't make any sense, kind of like you say potato and I say rutabaga.

Considering all the issues that have been posted with the auto chain tensioner, I would have the friendly dealer pull the cover (while you're standing there watching) and check the chain tension.  Very good chance that the adjuster has ratcheted up too tight.  Regardless, if the noise wasn't there for the first 2000 miles then it shouldn't be there now.  Have the dealer fix it.
