zumo 660 problem
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:14:04 PM »

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 660. My bike is a 2011 SE Ultra. Went on a 14 day ride and the GPS worked fine until the second to the last day. The voice instructions stopped coming through the speakers and the bike's speakers. If I remove the 660 from the bike, the voice instructions are fine. I'm wondering if anyone else had this problem and what they did to fix it. The closest Harley dealer to me is 420 miles away, so I'd rather fix it myself. Thank for the help.... Tom

Check your speaker select switch.
You may have it set to send the GPS to the headset.

It won't go through the head set or the bike's speakers.

It won't go through the head set or the bike's speakers.

I've had mine glitch when I was running the radio's Aux (660's Media Player)/CB/cellphone bluetooth all at the same time... I have the navigation prompts muted.  I actually received a call on the phone, the GPS prompted me that a call was incoming, but when I went to answer it I got nothing.

After that glitch, I noticed even the media player's audio stopped coming through the headset.  My solution was to pull off the road, attempt to call back the phone that was incoming only to get nothing... lucky for me it was just an automatted message from my doc.

After not being able to get anything through the system, I did one of the first things everyone should try at least once... I turned the GPS off and then on again and everything went back to normal.

Can't explain the glitches, but everything reset after the reboot and hasn't resurfaced... at least not yet.

I know it's not much, but you're not alone... there are a couple other threads on here dealing with the 660's noticed problems.

my 660 started after about 6 month/10.000m with first freezing once, everything ok after restart. Then it started to loose the connection to the bluetooth-headset after some time, had to be restarted. But the problems became more and more frequent fast, one month/2000 m later it had to be restarted 8 times on a 400 m trip and restart would be successfull only every second or even third time. Then I decided to send the unit to Garmin and got a new one: hardware failure, just shaked up too badly.

The new one is doing fine now for 2 month/3000 m - but let's wait and see ...

Thanks for the information Kraut.  I'm setting off on a trip this week, so will let all know how this one does.  I'm not new to Garmin.  I had a Nuvi on my Wing and it worked flawlessly for five years.  I am new to programming the maps having not used that feature in the past.  Going to be a little learning curve here...

I noticed the 660 turned off and then came right back on yesterday at least two times.  Don't know if that is a problem yet, as it is a new unit.

One thing I'd really, really, really want to change is how it is mounted to the handlebars.  I think the Ram mounts are the best in the industry, but this one just looks plumb ugly next to all the expensive shiny parts.  Does anyone know of better mounting choices?

Factory chrome handlebar mount is very well thought out and costs little more than the ugly RAM mount. If you have a fairing the HD Fairing mount is pretty slick and available with and without a dashpad.

how about that one?

That's the type I am getting fitted. Looks good on an Road Glide in the showroom, so decided to go that route rather than fixing on / in to the internal fairing panel. 1.5 months to go before delivery of my Glide. Time is dragging.

there is one disadvantage of this handlebar mount: it has to be wired externaly - and a big advantage over the fairing mount: you may shift the Zumo a little to compensate for sunlight/reflections.

I'm also thinking that mounting closer to the center of the handle bar will give you less vibration and maybe less problems.

I finding the chrome handle bar mount sets the GPS to close to view.  I finally got used to it but plan on faring mount in the near future.

I had a problem with the Zumo not working with the phone.  I took out the battery and then restarted it.  That worked.

I just took a trip from Tuesday last week up to yesterday morning.  There were a number of occasions the GPS would shut off, and then request selecting the option to stay on using battery.  Then the power would reconnect and it would cycle over and over. I found this to be very distracting. It was intermittant and there was no ryme or reason.  Today, to and from work, it worked great.

What I'd like to figure out, whether it is the connection, or is it within the unit itself?

What are others experience?

Will this correct with the HD Chrome mount?  I like the looks of the HD mount.

My Zumo 550 would switch off intermitantly Eagleye. I fixed it by using an erasure to clean up the contacts between the housing and the 550. But vibration does play havoc with the GPS. A few riders I know use the Touratech antivibration mount and this does help with the 550 and 660 switching off.
