Very disappointed in HD Led headlight
« on: August 26, 2012, 10:35:10 AM »

Just got back from vacation after installing a led headlight and I have to say I am not happy with it. Going straight it covers pretty well and is bright but on vacation we were in the mountains on some twisties and the light cuts off quick in the curves leaving where you are going dark. And the high beam is worthless... I am seriously thinking of selling the led headlight and putting the stock one back in with a 6000k hid bulb in it. I had this set up on my '05 &'11 and I liked the light that it put off. Has anyone else noticed this on the led headlight in curves??? Did I mention that the high beam is worthless???

Are you sure it's aimed correctly?

Try aiming all three lights properly before you start throwing expensive parts away.

I adjusted per instructions. Measured light height put mark on wall and adjusted from 25' back I think. The straight line light is good, it is in the curves that I don't like. The top of the beam is flat and in a tight turn the flat line goes more up and down leaving the top dark half into the turn and dark where you are going.

I won't toss it , it will be eBay time if I deside to get rid of it and put the money toward some progressive coil over shocks and loose the air shocks.

First post says you installed headlight, did you install Led passing lamps also?
If so, I concur with Jerry, the passing lamps are critical as well for proper adjustment

hdff, some times the aim is a little too high off the road. Try lowering it a bit and see if its any better. good luck

I adjusted mine following the instructions, and wasn't happy. Moved it a bit lower, and it's much better now. For me it's now a clear improvement to the stock lights.
Next improvement would be lights that turn in curves (like BMW has in the new 1600 GTL and GT) - but I guess we'll have to wait a few years before this becomes available for HD.

I have the LED headlights and LED passing lights installed. I noticed that when passing lights are off, I don't see well in curves. Only when I put the LED passing lights on that I see perfectly. So yeah, headlight alone isn't very good on curves.

That will be a $2k option, sir!

I'm in the same boat.  Your description is exactly the same as what I've experienced.  It's fine when driving down flat two-lane blacktop, but the high beam is just shy of useless, and it's downright scary in the twisties when you can't see what you're riding into.  The light it projects is beautiful white light, but the LED cutoff line is just too abrupt.  I'm glad I got a sweet deal on mine from a member of another forum, but the dual beam halogen my bike came with was better.  I found another deal on the LED passing lamps, so I figured I'd give them a shot too.  So far, I'm convinced the performance doesn't justify the price.

Either of you decide to sell, let me know.  I'm thinking about getting the trucklite.

The truckliite is great. I would never switch. It's that good. The write ups said it was the best light too. And it's half the price.    It's really an easy choice this time.  :).

That will be a $2k option, sir!

Maybe in the US. But we already pay about $1500.- for the main and auxiliary LED here in CH, so $2000.- would be actually a moderate uptick...  :nixweiss:
