Shifter Shaft Slop
« on: July 16, 2013, 11:59:15 AM »

Can you local experts please comment on this video.  Is this normal?  I had the leaking seal replaced with a cometic double-lip seal, but with this much slop, it seems like this is going to be a short term bandaid at best.  I've checked some other trans sitting on the shelf and they were rock solid so this seems to be a problem.  I'm thinking I really have to replace the Shifter Pawl and bushing before buttoning this thing up.  What do you guys think?

My 2004 SEEG had issues with the shift shaft seal wanting to Leak- Seep. Had the seal replace twice while under warranty and on the second time they replace the shaft also, which IMO didn't need to be replace! They assured me it would not leak again.....wrong.
Use a Cometic Seal..... the correct fix!
As for the excessive play in the video.... , I remember I thought mine had excessive play as well, it looks normal to me. :2vrolijk_21:

My '05 has a lot of play as well, but I don't remember if it's always been that way or not.  Looking at the design of the entire shift shaft/pawl assembly however, there really isn't much to prevent that play.  The shop manual doesn't have much to say on the subject, and there is no specification that I can find for radial or axial play of the shaft.  So I have to say I really don't have a clue if replacing the shaft and pawl will make any difference or not.  If the bore in the housing is severely worn, a new shaft may not have any positive affect at all.
