Starter ring gear question
« on: September 07, 2013, 01:56:09 PM »

Well I bought a Hayden chain tensioner and went to install it and found a ringer tooth in the bottom. My question is has anyone lived with a missing tooth before. Not that I am wanting to just ignore it but I am not ready to tear it apart further yet because I am still waiting for my 30 tooth sproket and 139 tooth belt.

I input will help

It seems very unlikely that you would have one chipped tooth and all the others in perfect condition. I would imagine a close inspection would reveal minor damage to other teeth.  That would mean metal shavings in the primary fluid which would lead to damaged clutch hub bearings. That is what happened to me. At a minimum, I would drain the primary fluid completely and flush.  Good luck!

Thanx Greg,

All I found was the one tooth in the bottom of the case. So hopefully just that one.

There's only a one in sixty-six chance that the ring gear would stop in that particular spot in front of the starter drive.  Just one in sixty-six dark and stormy nights....  ???  :huepfenlol2:

When the dealer missed 3 chipped teeth on my ring gear, the one in ??? chance seemed to be every other start.

Had the same thing on my old 99 RK, you would be surprised how often it would find that missing tooth, and always at the most inappropriate time, ended up buying a starter ring gear from Custom Chrome Cat, and fitting it myself , original is riveted on but replacement was bolt on, simple.

Eventually it will catch up with itself, and do more damage leaving you high and dry.  >:(
It's not a big deal to change the ring gear on the clutch basket.  ;)
