Air filter cover heats so much its burning my leg over jeans. Yesterday I rode with shorts and whenever my leg touches it it really burns.Any cure???

Pull the black Screaming Eagle cap over the AC , looks not bad , better protection for the paper-filter-element and against water and heat does not appear so hot . I allways have it pull over .

I was going to say don't wear shorts , but thats as wrong as Klaus' answer. cover restricts= hotter. if it gets that hot then there is another issue. I have the big sucker and the heat is fine with no deflectors

My fatboy appears to be running way less hot.I got the serg in stock config.Maybe I should change the pipes and tune it.

good luck with that. I too have enormous heat coming from my air cleaner. Mine is tuned and cat is removed. I spoke to dealer and they checked my tune and map. he said it is what it is.

The air cleaner, if it is hot, is absorbing heat from somewhere else. The EFI does not generate heat and the air passing thru should actually cool the housing. Your exhaust must be overly hot, I started mine and road it 2 miles after reading your post, my cover is actually cooler than ambient, unless it is sitting faceing the sun.
But the best idea is to not ride with shorts, jeans don't protect much, but they definitely will cut down on burns when you fall, and as we know there are two types of riders, those who have already fallen and the rest who will.

Cover is right in the airstream mine only gets warm during extended idle, and then not enough to burn.

I know, shorts are NOT the normal riding garb for us, but yesterday and I'm sure today is the same, with ambient temps approaching 100 with a heat index of about 108, I rode in shorts yesterday.

Now my '09 SERG is still completely stock and it IS a heat generator to say the least. I read about someone getting their calf burned from the rising or radiant heat. I still have the CAT and the main purpose of the CAT it to get HOT and burn off the NOX's. So in function our stock CAT is a heat factory.

My AC was extremely hot as well. I wouldn't say it would blister my leg, but you'd be stupid to do not try and avoid that area Whit your leg.

I'm not sure as I had no way to determine this, but after watching many TV drag races and being in hot locals while drag racing, I would say the area of I-70 we were riding on yesterday had a surface temp of probably in the mid to high 120's. You could just feel the reflection of heat from the surface as you rode over it. When possible and there are two types of surface, concrete or blacktop side by side, I ride over the concrete side and travel whatever speed needed to stay there. There is way more heat over the lighter colored concrete.

I do plan on getting this cooled down a bit with a set of 2" Fullsacs and a TTS Mastertune. I'll also cut open the pipe and kill the CAT. That being said, what are you other guys seeing for heat? this bike is way hotter than my '08 SERK with the V&H Dresser dual installed. I had SE-AC and PCMIII along with the V&H system.

On the SEUC there are the mid frame deflectors, do they help much? I've hear of several companies making them, but they all do about the same thing other than the HD ones are matte finished and if painted they would still look matte finished.

So what are others doing for the heat issues?

pull the throttle and ride faster , that`s the only way of efficiency cooling down and makes fun .

Only ride December 15th to February 15th... Summer could be the culprit...Just a thought...An Ice pack duct taped to the right leg is another option that could help...Or sell your bike to an amputee..? Just trying to brain storm some idea's...

Here in Canada they charged me extra for the "hot filter option". It allows us to get a full six weeks of riding each season.

If AC is hot, my guess is there's something else going on. On the Sturgis road trip, riding over 100 degrees a couple of days, the heat never came from my AC. The Kuryakan heat shields were a great investment for me and my wife noticed the difference immediately.

Didn't realize the CATs were heat factory, so I will be ditching them soon. Any readers on this post that have simply switched out to the 96" headers to get away from the CATs? I have Cobra slip-ons and like the look and sound and may want to keep them.

Sem_ I switched out to the 96' headers to get past the CAT. I also love my Cobra slip on's, however I still get a lot of heat out of the AC even with heat shields too. My right calf was blistered going to the Black Hills.

Perhaps you should check the point , where the pipes meat the engine-heads , perhaps the pipe isn`t fitting there exactly?

Well that may be the case.It is very hot here during the summer.Around 100s.I will check pipes connection.

what puzzles me (lots of stuff) is how some of us are stating that the heat from the AC area is intolerable and others are saying that it is not an issue. How can that be? we all have the 110's and for the most part have made similar mods for example, cats gone, some tuner, baffles replaced. what is the root cause of this? is it the tune that regulates the heat issue? Someone with more knowledge than me has got to offer some information/ideas. Thanks.

yes, it is the tune. I don't have midframe air deflectors and I too rode the black hills 2 weeks ago, no heat issues. around here in Tennessee the temps have been scorchers, high 90's, still no heat issues.

Sert the bike out and have it re-tuned.Install different slip-on's or pipes. I went with a heavy breather intake and it stays nice and cool. Don't use the sock because it limits airflow. I only use sock in a rain down pour.

so i contacted a reputable guy in NJ that has a lot of experience tuning. I told him that I have SSERT. he recommends the TTS for a couple reasons but can get it done with what I have. I am bringing it in next week to Black Hills Custom Parts. Anyone have work done there? I spoke to Ken who sounds like a very nice guy and very knowledgable.

Mine was really hot too but I had lowers on it at the time. Took them off for the summer, replaced the head pipe with a non cat one, replaced the stock baffles with Fullsac's, retuned with TTS and it's not nearly as hot. Don't know which one helped the most, but it's much better now.

Loose header connection would be audible and create a popping sound at decelleration. Air cooled big inch mills make heat on hot days... Shorts may actually be hotter than pants if you consider 100 plus temps, the motor and the sun. You may be a BMW guy and don't know it. I hear Gold Wings come with air conditioning and a wet bar for 010... this may be the answer...

But, I did see a Harley Girl riding a Sportster in shorts a couple of weeks ago at the dealer. Well, they were kinda shorts, but shorter, almost Daisy Dukes. Personally, I think that's fine.
