I read on another thread.....Larry suggests using fishing line and lighter fluid.
Not wanting to speak for Larry B, but I remember it because it sounded like that would be the ticket.

you were doing fine.
I just use the fishing line to slice it away, it won't scratch the paint/chrome. then I used a little lighter fluid on a rag and rubbed the residue off. WD-40 works too but I fly on the edge a bit more.
then get going on the stickers/ heat gun and wd-40.
