American Iron March Issue -103 Hop-up Part 1&2
« on: January 23, 2006, 01:35:51 PM »

HI folks I don't know if anyone has seen this issue of American Iron Magazine (March 2006).
I just got mine today and on page 50 they have a Tech article with photos by Chris Maida that is titled
"Hopping-UP an H-D 103" it is part one of putting on a Kuryakyn "Wild Things" performance package.
In it they have a parts list containing ;
TC-46G cams (#424)
S&S gear drive (#419)
S&S gear drive installation kit (#418)
Wild Things /Cometic cam gasket kit (#481)
Wild Things billet heads (#431)
Wild Things pistons ((#449)
Hi-Five air cleaner (#9480)
Wild Things 57mm throttle body (#9646)
Wild Things/Cometic top -end gasket set (#480)
They are installing this kit on a 2005 Sreamin Eagle Electra Glide it is being done at H-D of Greensboro by a Mr. David Thorpe.
They claim this setup does not produce pinging on 92 octane gas and you can use standard starter without compression releases. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
I cant attach the photos but thought some of you might be interested.

Got the magazine, read the article.

Cost of this package will be outrageous......heads alone are $3k.

They did that exact same build to a SEEG on an episode of American Thunder.
Mike Roland did the commentary and Bob Wright did the build. Pretty sure they used Basanni pipes. They dynoed it after the build and I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was significantly higher on HP than TQ.

I remember seeing that episode. I thought the numbers where mid 120's on both tq/hp. Not that great for ALL the money invested!!

I'm just gonna come out and say this and if it offends then so be it.

I think this business of mixing parts on your H-D is bullchit. If you want a bigger badder motor then buy a complete motor from Zipper's or S&S  or TP or whomever and get a motor that all the parts were intended to work together properly with. The road to hell is paved with good intentions and the road to the side of the road is paved with mixed bag motors  ;)

Have you ever heard the term "Devil's Advocate" ? Sometimes I do that and take a strong opinion one way to get folks to take strong opinions other ways and get really into a subject. Instead of just saying rah rah this or that they get into why they are rah rah this or that. The debate that ensues is of much greater value to all in that respect. I certainly would agree that the cam chain system is the Achilles Heal of the twin cam motor configuration. Still, from what I read on this site one can reasonably expect to get at least 20,000 miles out of the motor before it goes AND as I have found out 1st hand the dealer will warranty it. I have some friends with gear drive cams and they are not all that enamored with them. At the end of the day IMHO I'll stick with factory parts. Yes I have a Baker trans. Truly wish it was an H-D but it came with the bike. Still, the trans and motor do not share common parts that have to work together in carefully orchestrated synchronization.Bear in mind that I was running stroked Evo's before anyone made complete motors other than H-D. I remember how me and my bros threw a party when S&S finally offered a complete motor. One of the hardest things back on those days was figuring which parts worked with which. To me it's still a guessing game based on people thinking that if I buy the top rated cam, the top rated pistons, the top rated heads, the top rated rods, the top rated oil pump, I'll have the best motor. As someone who spends his days dealing with the upkeep of of some of the most technilogically advance military hardware in the history of mankind, I simply do not agree that you can mix parts like that. I do however respect, solicate, and honestly appreciate the opinions of fellow bikers like yourself.

Without taking an opinion one way or the other everyone should remember that one of these (Twin Cams or DDGs) are never sole source pieces to begin with.  They're all mixed bags supplied from subcontractors.  So when the "aftermarket" is also often the OE there might be just a bit less to be alarmed about.

We've all also learned for years and years from the automotive side of the history of tinkering that the aftermarket can supply crap or it can supply innovation and capability that the mftr either never decided to invest in, decided it didn't want to supply or decided we didn't need.  Even when not acquiring the crap, however, a great difficulty for the layman in using the aftermarket is that we don't (adequately) know what we're doing.  It's often not that the parts are necessarily bad, it's that we assemble bad combinations.  The end result is the same; poor performance or things breaking.  And, of course, we always blame the parts.  After all, we couldn't have screwed up  [smiley=drink.gif]

the main engines of a DDG are GE gas turbines 50,000 hp apiece  four of them to a ship spinning two screws through a  GE reduction gear. So while the bazillion other pieces of the ship are from a host of suppliers, the heart of the beast is matched and mated by one Mfg.  ;)

Nice of you to remember what it is I so though  I am really flattered

So  every component in an LM2500 comes from one design group and one master manufacturer with no inside or outside subs?  May have to go look up some supply contracts.

no idear what a DDG or an LM2500 is but no one makes their own bearings or gaskets or "O" rings, a manufacturer is usualy nothing more then an assembler. they may even be the designer but most outsource for forging and casting work.

One thought concerning this topic - just how many improvements / performance parts / etc. do you think H-D would have put out if it hadn't been for the aftermarket folks selling their fixes and improvements to us?

Hi folks,
The April 2006 issue is now out to continue the build on the 2005 103" Screamin Eagle Electra Glide! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

They still don't provide a price list but they do have photos and a dyno sheet. Sorry I can't scan the article but I will paraphrase. It goes from page 56 to 66.
On their sheet they claim the stock bike had 87ft.lbs. torque at 2700 rpm but at that rpm the new was at 100 ft.lbs.The torque climed to 118.61ft.lbs. at 5250 rpm. Stock peaked at 90.48 at 3900rpm.
Horsepower was 45hp at 2700rpm stock but new was 55hp at 2700rpm. New hp was 129.61 at 6500rpm where stock max hp was 83hp at 5750rpm. At 5750rpm the new made 125hp.
That meant the Kuryakyn/Wild things kit gave the SE 103" a gain of 47HP and 28ft.lbs torque. :o
They seemed very happy with the results. They said engine started and ran great at all settings.
