Starter issues
« on: June 28, 2014, 12:35:58 PM »

Went to start my 2010 Street Glide CVO yesterday and all I got was a loud clicking noise from starter. Battery is at 12.73 volts. Trigger pin reads a little over 9 volts when attempting to start. Seems both should be over 12 volts, but not sure where to go from here. Was starting fine prior to yesterday. Need to know how to trace this down to likely causes.

How old is your battery?  I've never had one last more than 3 years.

If you haven't kept it on a Battery Tender, the chances are very good it's your battery.

Battery is 3.5 years but still at 12.73 volts. Should be plenty of juice to start the old girl. I believe the wire running to the pin on the starter selinoid should be pumping closer to 12 volts rather that the 9.3 I'm getting out of it

put your tester on the battery then hit the starter and read the voltage while you hold the button on. If it drops down your battery is gone, if not wires are bad.

Start with the easy stuff 1st. Connections are clean and tight. Check voltage to solenoid, should be close to 10.5vdc. Battery load when cranking will lower the voltage when under load. I just had a problem the battery vdc was 12.78 but when cranking it dropped to 1/.5 but my ignition switch was bad dropping voltage down to 8 vdc. If the voltage to solenoid is good u highly suspect the solenoid contacts are worn/pitted. Rebuild kits are cheap and can be done without removing starter
