Safe maximum wattage for spotlight
« on: February 23, 2018, 03:07:06 PM »

2011 CVO Ultra Classic
What is the maximum bulb wattage that I can safely use in my spotlights? I have to replace one bad bulb but decided to replace both spotlight bulbs. Existing is 25watt, bulb # 881 or 889. O’Rielly auto parts has a 55/60 watt. Would these bulbs increasing wattage from 50watts to 120watts cause any problems? What is the highest wattage bulb I can safely use? Mostly ride during the day but if caught at night would appreciate the brighter light. Do not want to change anything but the bulb and keep bike stock except for bulb.  Thanks Guys!!

Avoid the issue altogether and find LED replacements. I think you'll find them for most applications.

If you have the "reflector" style passing lamps a lot of guys will use a #896 (IIRC) for a bit more light.  38W vs. 25W.  Any more you may risk damage to either the housings from heat or electrical system.

Take Gregs advice and do away with regular bulbs and use LED's.

I agree...don't see a downside to LEDs...better light, they last a long time in comparison, and less strain on the electrical system as a whole.

LEDs are the go. Much better light with less drain on your system.
