Title: GPS disc??
Post by: opee6969 on October 29, 2008, 06:02:13 PM
My dealer is telling me that I don't have to keep the GPS disc in the head unit to use the GPS. From what I can tell, the manual says I can download the info, but is vague on whether I need to leave the disc installed in the radio. I can't get the GPS to work with the disc out. Anyone know if I'm doing something wrong or if the dealer is incorrect?

It loads the map/route of where you are going based on what you put in as point A and point B.  But if you go outside the route the GPS plotted you will go "off route" and the GPS will then just "point" in the direction you should be going, this until you get back on a street/road that was plotted by the GPS route.

If you leave the disk in it will always show the street/road where you are.

So, yes it will work but not perfectly.

I found this out when I took a ride with a group.  I put in the point a/b but they took a differnt route.  GPS would have still got me there.

Buy the Zumo, get the visual and don't have to worry...

You need to leave the disc in for the initial calculation (destination etc). Once that is done you can take it out, but if it has to re-calculate, you'll need to put the disc back in. It's pretty much a POS (IMO), can't do multiple destinations or waypoints for example.

Thanks for confirming that the dealer, once again, doesn't know what they're talking about. Do you have any pics of your Zumo installed on your bike?

I have to agree. I tried the HD navigation. It's a piece of chit. Buy the Zumo.

Make a search with Zumo or Zumo installation...
You've many topics on this subject, eg.: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=17558.0 (http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=17558.0)

Have never tried mine but agree that it is a piece of chit.  But it is our piece of chit and we paid for it.  Moco could have left this out and saved us a couple bucks.

The only thing I've been using my GPS for is to find gas and HD shops. It works really well for that while you're on the fly. Of course that's if you leave the appropriate disc in the stereo lol.

For $750, I think I'll just continue to use the traditional map when needed. I've got other things, like exhaust, that need to be done first.
