LED's - directionals
« on: October 11, 2008, 10:47:54 AM »

I replaced my bulbs with LED's while up at Americade.

Before I got home two units were out.
They come with a lifetime warranty, so just an email had two replacements in the mail.

I had another unit burn out while out MV (literally)
Just received a replacement and the new lamp is significantly brighter then the old.

Starting to wonder if LED's just get dim by being on all the time.

Picture below has a new bulb on the right (left side of bike)

While trying to get a picture of the LED's in the blinker mode I got this shot of the unit just starting to turn on. You can't see this because it is so fast.

I thought LED's are supposed to run cooler and take less current than a bulb?    :nixweiss:

I have front and rear Kuryakyn LED's with no problems.  Almost 3 years and 27K miles.  I had my rear LED's off recently and the bulb bases were nice and shiny and not burnt.  Must be the vendor of the LED's..

are those led's from custom dynamics?

if so there has been a change in led upgrades, that would be why one is brighter than the other, the dimmer one goes from about 30-40% to full on flashing, the new one is always at 100% and goes on and off.the new bulb is most likely the eclips style.I have had these on my street glide for a 1 1/2 yrs and all is good, will be doing a complete set up with the cuse4.One thing to chech is that the ft turn signals arn't getting h2o in them.I have had this problem before and had to seal them were the light mounts to the brkt with clear silicone

hope this helps,if I can help let me know

Duane it is most likely moisture that caused the burn out or short and if you are having multiple lites burn out that is what I would look at first.

They have to know the directionals will get wet/damp inside, and the bulbs made appropriately.

They are getting both units back to try and test.

Its nothing to do with being on all the time or heat.  The one being dimmer is a ground problem.  You got these from Hog City Lights which is one of our dealers.  We see this alot on some of the newer bikes.  Yes they do get moisture in the housing and once you replace the bulb with an LED unit, the current is a lot less and a good ground is critical.  Taking the unit in and out a few times will take some of the crud off of the contacts that has built up and even by replacing it with a new puck will clean up the contacts enough.  Even though the was nothing wrong with the old puck.

Mike, one unit had LEDs out when I plugged it in. The second one died within a week - no moisture.

As to the "burned" unit, that was a front directional, and I just don't see how you can ride 2-3000 miles and not hit some rain. So they are going to get damp. Bulbs never went bad when wet.

Besides, on the burned unit I think there was something else going on, it got hot enough to discolor the inside of the directional housing, which now means when using a bulb it shows up.

Not the first time I worked on a 12v system.

The units had the same result switching left to right.
