 :pumpkin:
Ride S
Fired00d
 :fireman:

Gary I couldn't find a web site that gave detailed information on what the Captains license means

I received my OUPV license with an endorsement to tow.   This allows me to be hired by up to 6 individuals in Inland waters ie; bays rivers, sounds, etc in the U.S.A. and up to 100 miles offshore . This opens up the Bahamas and when things change, also Cuba. This can be done in a vessel up to 100 tons of displacement.
You have to be a US citizen, be 18 years old, 360 days on the watersince your 15th birthday, not convicted of any felonies, and speak English to qualify to take the test.

My next step is to upgrade to 200 tons in an inspected vessel, If the Coast Guard allows some of my sea time, that was not allowed when I took my test, I should have enough sea time to accomplish that. That was wrong in saying it was not allowed....I had a boat that I had over 800 documented days on the water and for some reason the Dept of Wildlife in NC can see where I bought the boat, sold the boat, but can't see where I registered the boat....since this mix up occured my time on that boat is being held for 12 months for me to get it strait with the Dept of Wildlife......

Very impressive Brian!!
I know from Duane getting his years ago how hard that test is! I know you are into those speed boats but hey, how about a really nice boat that I know is for sell?
I also know that someone could give a good deal on that 43 Foot Post he has.
It is already set up with state of the art equipment and is nicer inside than his home is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OR we could work out a deal to rent it if you would like to try it on for size. Nothing like a weeks vacation at the Jersey Shore. :mango:

Unless you live in North Carolina, I quess!!

Good luck and Safe seas..

All you should have had to do is write a letter stating so. 200 tons is a big step, need celestial nav (biggest difference from 100 ton master)

what the Captains license means - able to take "passengers for hire" (does not have to be a monetary exchange - but that is the best way)

Congrats Brian!

Is this the "tonnage" License?

In the USCG world, tonnage has nothing to do with weight (that and many other words).

Tonnage is an archaic method of measuring cargo capacity (volume)

The "license" is issued upon succesufully completeing a 4 part test (diffulcult) proper completion of paperwork (very diffulcult) And now a DHS background check ( :nixweiss: depends on your history).

The tonnage on a license refers to the expiernnce level.
eg - if all your days at sea are limited to being on a small boat your license will be limited to 25 tons, the first step.

The beginng stages are 25 - 50 - 100 - 200 -500 etc, 200 and above are much more diffult to obtain.

Most "6-pac" charter boats (sport fishers) fall into the 25 ton cat.

The head boats you see are usually just under a 100 ton rating, for a good reason, and typically under 100'.

Help any?

My Brother has a Master's license that is for any vessel, any waters, any tonnage. He also has pilotage licenses for most of the eastern seaboard. He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy 36 years ago and is still sailing, most recently as Master of a USNS vessel (RoRo) bringing banged up tanks, HumVees etc back for refurb and taking the just like new ones back to the Middle East. My Dad used to say before he died. I've got one son that builds em and one that sails em.

Should have read more...I always think of the 6-pack as just that (neve 25 tons) and the 100 ton as the next category...thus tonnage...

Actually, there is no such thing as a "6 pac" license.

The first license available is an "OUPV" - Operator of an Uninspected Passenger Vessel. Vessels that carry less then 6 passengers for hire do not need to be inspected by the USCG, hence the "6-pak" moniker.
That does not mean that the vessel is not required to meet all the USCG and DOT safety standards, just that the USCG does not physically inspect the vessel. They will though if you have an "incident".

The next license up from the OUPV is "Mate" and then "Master"

The most basic of the "Masters" is inland waters or lakes at a 25 ton limitation (remember cargo capacity not weight)
For most mariners in the recreation phase the license goes up to 100 ton NC (near Coastal). Near coastal is not specified but generally accepted to mean 100 miles from the nearest safe port of refuge.

After that the same "Master" has increased tonnage ratings up to 1600 tons and endorsements, the first one needed being celestial navigation.

The next jump is "any tonnage any waters" - think ships of any size.

There are a few more, such as "sailing" and "Master of Towing" for the tugboat people.

An example of a the tonnage thing: If you have a 25' Boston Whaler and it was USCG documented it would be documented as "less then 5 gross tons"
My boat, which physically weighs about 38,000 pounds (19 tons) is documented by the USCG as being 30 gross tons. If my boat really weighed 60 thousand pounds it would be stuck to the bottom.

Either way getting your license is a long involved process, requires a difficult test and paperwork scrutiny, and a more thorough background test since 9-11

Kudos to Brian  :2vrolijk_21:

You are right about the amount of paper work involved in getting this license.

Letters of recommendation:

Drug testing:
make sure on these two that the doctor dots his I's crosses his T's and has his correct license number on the forms.....one of       the guys in Charleston, his doctor for the drug testing had not filed the correct form and they sent him back home with nothing

Physical:

Documentation: of any and all boats that you have been on since your 15th birthday, and have the owner sign and notarize those days

Application: for which license you are applying for

CPR: class has to be done and certified by an authorized instructor

I think that is all........oops....PASS THE TEST :2vrolijk_21:  almost forgot......took me 5 hours to take the test.....missed 2 questions...and I still remember them

On the bright side - cpr and 1st aid is not required for renewals

And all sea time can be self documented.

Did you get an actual frameable license?

When they are done with the TSA ID card everything will be on the card - no more fancy cert to hang on the wall.
