Missing Andy Rooney
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:07:16 PM »

Andy has only been gone a couple days and I already miss him.  I always looked forward to his essays on life's little irritants.

One of my peeves is that no matter where you call they always say 'listen carefully to the menu because our options have changed.'  I guess someone does have a job jockeying those options around just to confound us all.

And that same guy or gal is really devious.  Many times pressing '0' not longer gets a real person on the line.  You really do have to listen to several options to find a real live person.

And what about those voice recognition systems - 'sorry I did not understand that, etc.'  And I never know who to ask for - operator, representative, agent, customer service specialist and the most recent new fangled title I learned was 'team member.'

Geez Andy.  Why'd you leave us so soon.

In one of his books Rooney describes heading out across America to find out the reasons why people choose to do the work they do, he said he could never understand why a garbage man would want to pick sanitation as a career, his observations were summed up by a visit to a janitor of a hospital.

When Andy asked the cleaner why he did his job fro a living the guy responded that his job was the most improtant in the facility and he took pride in the responsibility it brought, Andy kind of looked down on the cleaner and asked how it was that he thought he was more important than a brain surgeon or cardiologist, these people went to school for years and earbed six or seven figures for the work they did.

The cleaner took a moment and responded by saying "it doesn't matter if they are the best sergeons in the world, if I haven't cleaned the "OR" to the best of my ability odds are good that the pateint will catch and infection and may even die!"

Andy had a great way of connecting with the public regarding the sometimes mundane and at times poignant things impacting us in everyday life.  A good witty man, like a member of the family.  He was as anticipated as the paper delivery each Sunday in our house.  I too will miss his funny commentaries at the end of 60 minutes.  RIP dear Andy.  You will be missed.

Andy's segment on 60 minutes was about the only thing I would listen to on that show.

He was an arrogant SOB but I loved watching him. I was in Minnesota at MSP airport and a woman walked up to him and asked for his autograph on a piece of paper. He told her to buy his dam book and he might consider signing it. You will be missed....

I enjoyed Andy on 60 minutes and his books. I just hope everyone doesent get flooded with the false emails stating "Andy said this" or "Andy said that" etc. So many people just pass on emails like that without verifying whether it's true or not.
