Title: Paint protection film on tank
Post by: Harrybeerbelly on March 27, 2021, 01:01:34 PM
Okay so I would like to install PPF on my new FLTRXSE.  I have done this on other bikes and cars.  The graphics on the tank are stickers but appear to be covered with clear.

My question is if I decide to remove the PPF will that be a problem with the sticker graphics coming off with the PPF?

Thanks for your input.   It looks like the graphics are under clear.  It is factory.  Just very nervous if I need to remove the PPF graphics will lift.

Maybe I will wait and see if / when the tank starts getting scuf marks from jeans and chaps and then decide.

Just an update for anyone that is interested.  I have learned the CVOs have three coats of clear.  More than plenty to protect the graphics.
I installed the PPF with no issues.

Hopefully you have no problem if you try to remove the PPF but it makes no difference how many coats of clear you have if the first coat didn't bond to the decal it will lift when pressure is applied to remove the PPF.
Sorry but depends on initial prep, not depth of clear.

I had it installed on my 2014 Dayton Blue Street glide. When they took it off it pealed the clear & the Gold Leaf Harley writing.

I have a dense grey foam mat that I cut to fit on top of my tanks. It's for my dog. He loves to ride and I can't keep him off the bike when I fire it up. The mat is 1/2 inch thick and flat, so I used some one inch, two sided sticky tape to keep the edges down.

About a month later I took the mat off to ride solo & I thought the adhesive left globs on the tank. NOPE, it had pulled the top clear coat off in one inch chunks. The second clear coat was shiny in those spots??? Lucky for me it was above the flames, and I was able to wet sand the edges and blend it in. The first clear coat wasn't prepped before they shot the second layer on. I couldn't believe it. Be careful, your milage may vary.
