Little black specs on pipes!
« on: June 28, 2015, 11:33:11 AM »

In Chicago, summer is also road construction season!  I avoid "fresh oil", "rough grooved surface" and "construction ahead" at all costs.  I was traveling along a road that intersected a construction road....I had to go over it.  I got home last night and gave the bike its waterless wash cleaning and I noticed that my rinehart mufflers had black specs all over them.  Nothing on the paint, wheels or frame.  I ended up having to soak the pipes in goo gone and my thumb nail for about 20 minutes per side.  This is bound to happen again, is there an easier method....please share!

Use a penny to scrape them off....if they are baked on and hard.

If what you have are tiny specks of tar or asphalt, a much simpler method is to use mineral spirits on a rag, or just good ol' WD-40.  It will dissolve the material and you can just wipe it away.   I always follow with a regular wash and rinse to remove any solvent.  Of course it will also remove any wax you may have on the pipes, but so will any other solvents.

I use chrome polish and lightly rub it with 00 steel wool.  Works every time.  An old nickel works also just like a penny.  They say it's because the coin is softer than the chrome.  No matter what you use, watch your work closely.  It is possible to scratch the chrome, but it's usually just fine little tiny scratches.  Still, you wanna do it gently and patiently!

After reading your replies, I think I'd try WD40 also.  I don't know why I didn't think of that myself...heck, I use it to take those warning decals off chrome, so why wouldn't it work safely for tar and other grime on your chrome?!?

a big  :2vrolijk_21: for WD-40 on the tar.....dang stuff can do just about everything.  As Jerry stated, a good washing is recommended after use.....at this point it may be a good time to reference another thread going on using Dawn to remove grease (WD in this case)

The other thing it could be is rubber from the drive belt if it's still new. If there is more on the left pipe it's problaby rubber/kevlar from the belt, happened to mine as well.
