best radar dectector for SE2?
« on: January 26, 2007, 11:02:14 PM »

Looking for the best waterproof radar detector?  I am NOT going to mount it on the dash so that is not a consideration.

What are everybody's recommendations?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

radar roy is the guru for these things but they are cheaper on ebay. look him up on the net and read his m/cycle recommendations. i dont know if any are waterproof. i was thinking about the escort 8500 mounted inside front fairing with the h.a.r.d. system wireless warning light attached inside helmet. let us know what you learn [smiley=banana.gif]

While the rd's are cheaper on ebay, you're often buying a refurbished unit without any warranty.  They may say they're new, but the unit is usually a factory refurb.  No warranty.  The escort 8500 isn't waterproof, though I'm not sure how much true water it would see inside the fairing.  I'd question it's ability to operate effectively when mounted inside the fairing.  I have a Bell Rx65 Pro for my truck.  I like it, though you have to play with it some to get maximum performance out of it.  Radar Roy is great!  He offers a discount to CVO members.  He also has regular discounts through his email system.  Just go to his site, sign up and just wait a little while.  You can also learn alot from the forum (www.radardetector.net), wheere there's even a bike thread.  I bought mine from Roy and wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again.  I wouldn't even look someplace else.  His prices are fair and his customer service is great.

Personally, I looked for a long while before I settled back on the Harley unit. I mounted it on my SE2 dash, and modified the dash pad.  My neighbor unbalanced also did the mod.   The reason I went this route, was due to the audio and visual.. It has a speaker pod aimed at the rider, and it is positioned well for peripheral viewing.  Also, if any false alerts are annoying, one tap on the power button and it goes to mute.  Overall, can't think of a better unit for a motorcycle application.

I also used the HD unit since it's made by Escort.  I've had several Escort units in the past and they really work well.  I also had it mounted to the dash and modified the dash pad.  It works very well and has saved me several tickets :mango:

Do you have to drill a hole in the inner fairing and/or cut into the leather dash?

Looks like you have to do both.  I know the mount does require a mounting hole and also a means to route the wires into the fairing.  Also, looking at the pic, it requires cutting off the corner of the pad.

ULTRAFXR/Red,

Yes to both.  You have to drill two small holes in the inner fairing to mount the holder and run the wiring through to connect to power. ( I have mine on the switched side so it goes on when the ignition is turned on and off when turned off.  As for modifying the dash pad, I took it to an upholstery shop and they charged me $40 to cut it and re do the leather.  The good news is if you ever wanted to go back to stock, you can buy a new dash pad and it will cover the holes.  I really like having the RD where it is, as it is easy to see/hear when it goes off.  It is also protected a bit by the windshield, but not obstructed.  It also comes off pretty easily when you need to park and leave the bike.  Hope this answers your questions.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, that is good to know that a new dash pad will cover the holes in the inner fairing.  Might get me to change my mind.

I installed the Whister Motorcycle radar detector in my Ultra this winter. Replaced the useless air temp. gauge. Looks cool. Blue readout.  Don't need to worry about someone stealing it. Detects signal from front & back of the motorcycle.  Includes air temp readout and charging system readout.  Three year warranty.

Doesn't have an audio feature yet. Been told once it is created it would be a plug & play feature.  Blue light on dash & on the gauge alerts you that a signal has been detected.  I've seen negative comments but I've had Whistler products in the past that worked very good.  I didn't want something that someone could easliy steal.
