Surprise...Excessive Crank Runout
« on: March 13, 2011, 07:59:08 AM »

Started to build my '11 this weekend, pulled the cam cover off to check runout and with less than 2K miles had .006 run out. Couldn't believe it..Not going to build it on that weak foundation...Put it back together and going to ride it like I stole it... Cheap Ass Chinese cranks. Look on the bright side...it saved me about $4 -$5K.

Greg,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Some wheelies should help.

Don't feel bad, you get the same crap from 'co called superior race engines' which Jim's is well known for. I personally had this experience on two of their 131" Race Engines, first with same mileage as yours and the second with 0 milage right from their sleazy grimy hands and out of the shipping crate..  :-[ Third time will either be a charm or a total strike out   :nixweiss:

At a time when many industries have squeezed tolerances to extremely tight and consistent levels, H-D can't make a simple flywheel assembly as good as the ones from 20 years ago.  Remind me again why I refuse to buy one of their new "wonder bikes". :nixweiss:

Just a few short years ago, .003" was the maximum tolerance for a worn out part, and new assemblies generally measured .001" or less.  Maybe they need to step back a few cycles in the evolution of the parts, before ultra cheap became the one and only criteria at H-D.

So with our current production cranks, do you guys think that they are out from the start or do they "go" out after so many miles, wheelies, burnouts, or just lugging the heck out the motor?

I can't say that I've read any of us here that actually pulled one down brand new to check out the crank, only after it's down for issues or like this case, to do some mods on the motor.

What say ye?

Curious minds would like to know...

I think most are out from the start....   A result of the current design coupled with the assembly process...

I had one measure 14/1000 right out of the shipping crate 0 miles. The first one had 2500 miles, measured 17/1000 and the hardest miles that engine saw was a one dyno tune. When you ask for a true and welded crank and you get 14/1000 run out at 0 miles, you gotta think someone has a major QC problem.....someone needs to initiate drug testing  :nixweiss:

Texas 103, If you have that much runout on your cam side, do you think you would also have a lot of runout on the primary side? And if that is true wouldn't that cause damage in the primary to the charging system etc. Would you feel it cruising at highway speeds? Just curious if someone could comment on those questions. Mine measured out at .008 45K ago at 15K miles. I run her hard at times and at 60K she makes a lot of noise but still runs strong.
