For those that haven't discovered this yet every once and awhile take chrome cover off and the three nuts on the bottom and you will discover oily crud and road gravel like to build up and hide here.

Once a year I take off the chrome cover and clean the oil cooler, as gently as possible so as not to harm the fins.  Does anyone have a good way to clean it without damaging the oil cooler, Maybe some type of solvent?

I use any brand of Brakeclean I happen to have! It removes crud quickly, leaves  no residue. FWIW twinotter. :)

You might try some Evaporator Coil Cleaner for A/C units....NOT the Condensor Coil Cleaner as it is a strong acid based cleaner that can remove paint on the fins.  The Evaporator cleaner is milder and will remove most dirt or oily residue.  If you do happen to bend any of the fins, they can be straightened with a fin comb.  These items may be available at Lowes, I'm not sure.  They are definitely available at any HVAC/Refridgeration supply house, if they will sell to the public.
