Title: CVO PAINT JOBS
Post by: Sil on April 30, 2017, 08:01:57 PM
Does anyone know if the CVO paint jobs are being outsourced or are they painted in-house by Harley-Davidsson, i noticed a sticker on my CVO side cover with a company called Gunslinger custom painter located in Colorado.

Lots of info about that subject already on this site. Gunslinger is/was a preferred vendor used by HD for CVO paint.

Gunslinger in Colorado and Calibre in Wisconsin are two of the suppliers Harley has used for CVO paint.  Some years have been as one would expect and some (early SEUC) had tremendous problems.

If memory serves me correctly Harley did the 1999 FXRs themselves.  After that it was subcontract work.  Very early on some of the work even went to a shop in Mexico if the consistent stories are true.  2002 SERKs supposedly done at a subcontractor there.

This surprises me.   I had heard there was acvo team that built all cvos. By hand in York including paint.   Astounding to hear they farm that out to where no control is present over the process one a 40k bike.

You're going to learn a lot on this forum.

The MoCo did build CVOs on a dedicated assembly line however, that's no longer the case.  Now they're built on the line with standard models.

Seems like the paint jobs actually got better in the later years From what I have seen. :2vrolijk_21:

They only farm out the paint.  Actual assembly is done on the automated line at York.  Used to be a separate line, non-automated, for the CVO bikes in another building at York.  Literally bikes on wooden dollies rolling from station to station.  The automated line with the automated tools is better.  It may not sound as "special" and they have had mistakes occasionally mixing up painted parts that didn't belong where they ended up.  But overall we're still better off.  Especially so as the bikes have gotten more complicated the last few years.

Just noticed tonight in the bottom of my saddle bag is a inspection sticker by Gunslinger. Had the bike since last Sep and never noticed it.  ::)

Perhaps they had a better finish, but the best colors are on the 11.5 FLHTCUSE6   ;)

'Probably have 8-10 favorites over the years,,, 'Thinking my top 2 are;

The '00 SERG Orange / Black / White,,, with The Colors & The Graphics, it looks like a BillBoard going down the road,,, Really stands out,,, at Rest or at Speed...
One of these days, I want to duplicate that Paint Scheme on a newer RG...

The '01 FXDWG2 "SwitchBlade" Scarlet Red / Gold Leaf Flames, together with the Red Frame and the Tan Ostrich Seat are simply striking... 'Back in the days of the chopper craze, it would be parked among the $50k customs,,, Always had the biggest crowd...

The Caption on The Harley Marketing Poster says it all,,,
"Cars Have To Be Upside Down and On Fire to Get This Much Attention"  :pepper:

Back to the OP,,, Gunslinger Painted the Chopped TourPak on the '09 (ordered through Dealer in '12) and I had GS Paint the Vented Lowers, Speaker Surrounds & MidFrame Deflectors...
'Not Sure who Painted any of my Bikes originally?? Does anyone know how to find out???

I googled Gunslinger and found their website.    It has an image of a guy hand pinstriping a 2015 or 2015 CVO Street Glide fairing...

Their Facebook page has some more pics.

I airbrushed most of the 2012 cvo street glides and also the fat boys I believe, the ones that had the skulls. If you have one with a mustache, most likely on the front fender let me know.

Gunslinger is definitely painting the CVO's this year. They also have a custom shop that's going to be painting my fat front tire fender to match my 22 CVO RGL next month!

I know Gunslinger painted my ‘19 Mako because there was a sticker in the saddlebag and chopped TP. On my ‘22 Blue Steel there are no stickers at all. Not sure Gunslinger painted it. Also just received the Chopped TP and again no indication it was painted by Gunslinger.

Where is the Gunslinger custom shop? I looked at their website but everything I read said they only work with companies like HD.

Thanks, that is the site I’ve looked at but it mentioned they no longer work with individuals. I think I’ll give them a call.

I am interested to know if the 2012 Hot Citrus and Antique Gunstock SG's were painted by Gunslinger.
Here's my bike when it turned up at the dealer in Melbourne.
Bike is still in the family and runs like a dream.
