I have a 2007 Ultra classic CVO and have a noisy compensator. I ride conservatively. Would a 2015 compensator assembly with the rotor be a reliable upgrade? Will it last with out the oiler tray that attaches to the primary cover?
I'm asking as it seems the stock compensator is not adequate and the 4010061 upgrade kit is out of my price range. (retired with medical bills)

I wouldn't put the new style compensator (also the rotor is needed) on without the plastic oil deflector. The compensator wouldn't hold up all that well without direct oil to the retaining screw that also acts as an oil distribution point to the compensator. You can buy the parts needed at HD. I'd get a new 10500031 fastener as well. And you need a T-70 torx bit for the bolt.

HD describe the "Compensator" as a wear item, in that it wears you replace it!! I am in the UK and have had a lot experience with the verious versions of the compensator, at one time had the latest version along with what was called a "Compensaver" basically a additional oil tray the directs primary oil directly onto the centre of the comp, that setup worked well, did about 10k on it and when I changed it out for the new "Man of war" comp, it was still on good condition, The Man of War comp is more exspensive but after 1 year of use works well and is much quieter.

Have I just been lucky? Have a 2009 SECU, 68k miles and a 2013 SERK, 41K and neither have lost a comp or seen the inside of a stealers shop.
Prolly just jinxed that deal.

Stock SE comp went south at 30,000. Installed Darkhorse. Never started better.

That comp would be fine but do get the oil tray they're inexpensive from HD the epoxy resin that HD says to use to hold the tray in place with is expensive and it's no different then the gorilla epoxy resin you get from your local shops use that.
Scratch up the back of the oil tray (make nicks and ruff it up) that will help the resin grip hold the tray better.
