Title: Camshaft lobes Hardness wearing off
Post by: Paulgta on March 11, 2023, 08:51:36 AM
Good morning guys I got a 2016 with 42k about to go in and do lifters as preventative maintenance. My question to you is how much wear on the cam lobes is ok? I did cam swaps an a motor with 20k and those cams already had the hardness layer worn in certain spots.  I assuming my cams will show some wear at 42k.  Not looking to change cams but do you think it’s worth putting in some low mile or new take out 255 cams ?

Perhaps a rephrasing of the question will help:

If I'm seeing something I don't like and that concerns me, and I can buy parts to fix it pretty cheap, and I'm going to be in there anyway, and it might save a hugely catastrophic failure later, should I go ahead and do it?

Just as a reference, here is a cam I just replaced with about 40K miles on it.

Your instincts are good.

I always replace everything to eliminate the need to go back in later.

Although it seems to be an accepted practice to just change the lifters by many, no engine guy worth anything would say always start with 2 new surfaces.  Now that being said with the frequency that lifters need / should be changed as long as there is no wear present, the risk is up to you.  If there is wear present the cam should be changed and it should be noted that without removing the cam and throwing a mic on it your never really gonna know.  I believe the only way so many get away with not changing the cam is because your dealing with a roller cam and not a flat tappit.

If the lifter wheels have poor hardening, they will take out a cam. Post pictures of your cams.
