Post by: Garrys99FXR3 on January 15, 2010, 06:43:08 AM
I will be riding along and all of a sudden the eng just stops, like i turned off the key. NOT GETTING FIRE TO PLUGS.      But if i let it set for 30 mins it will start right up and run all day. Last night it started right up and i turned it off and tried to start again, will not fire, but when i turned the key on again one of the plugs fired and i didnt even hit the start button. New coil and batt good. CAN ANYONE HELP PULLING MY HAIR OUT

Do you have stock or aftermarket ignition? Sounds like a bad ignition to me. You already did the coil so no spark could be the sensor in the cam cone or the module. some aftermarket setups are all in the cone. I hope its not a Dyna ignition because I had 2 of them and one of there coils leave me on the road. Give me some more info and I will try to help?  :nixweiss:

Well the thing that throws me is that it tried to start without pressing the starter boutton. That would make me think there's a short happening somewhere. The ECU wouldn't cause the starter to crank, but the 20 minute wait before starting also don't make sense with a short. I had this type of problem with a cam position sensor on my truck and one of our old cars, except for the starting on it's own.

Had a similar problem with a 1906 FLHTCU, ended up being the ignition switch, left me stranded in Key West.  Spent $350.00 to rent a truck to haul the bike to Fort Myers and found out there had been such a problem with them that I had to wait till HD built one or imported it.  Installed new switch ran like a top.

Good Luck

Hi,
I had simular issues on my FXR4. I checked everything no problems found. The last thing I dis  was to clean the oil from around the alternator and voltage regulator plug and never had any more problems. I think in my case that one in a while it would short to ac voltage to ground and after awhile it was all good for a while. If it is dirty clean it, if not clean it anyway and see what happens. Let us know.
Thanks,
Ltank

Hi,
I was currious if you cleaned the Alt/Voltage regulator connections yet. I wanted to clarify my previous reply to you.
After I cleaned mine , I have not had any problems at all. The Alternator puts out about 22 vac. If acv shorts to ground, this would be changing the ground potential on your battery with a continous plus/minus voltage swing. I took my bike apart, cleaned every connector, Ohmed out every wire checking for shorts/opens/ chaffed wires. I found nothing! As a last resort,I cleaned the Alt/Regulator connections and no problems yet. Put over 1,000 miles and all is good!!! AC voltage on a negative grounded system can do strange things! It made me crazy for a while, when troubleshooting my electrical problem. I know what you are going through! I am a Electronic Tech by trade.
Sometimes not all problems are logical and get confusing.I really hope that this helps. Let us know!!
