Harley Harley EVO Starter Chattering
« on: October 14, 2020, 09:12:55 PM »

When starting my 98 RK, there was some chattering noise before starting not the typical Zinging sound when a Starter Clutch fails. I replaced the Battery that tested bad and inspected and tightened all connections. Battery cables are good. Anyway I think that maybe the starter clutch. Did I guess correctly? Hopefully so because I ordered another  starter clutch. Any input is appreciated.  Thanks

Not an uncommon failure and is obviously different than when a drive isn't engaging.  Also significantly cheaper than replacing the entire starter.  Can't actually hear yours so obviously can't say with any certainty.  From your description it's a good guess though.

I installed a New Starter Clutch and made sure all connections were clean. Cable ends were good so I say it was the Starter Clutch.

Your success somehow jinxed me.  Was a great weather day this afternoon and decided to take the FXR for a ride after school.  It had other ideas.  Had to re-replace the starter relay.  It's second in two years.  Last one was a cheap generic piece I grabbed at a local auto parts store.  This time spent more for what's probably the same thing but is OE!

Mine runs again too though.  So we declare victory!

Starter relay can be easily bypassed in a pinch.
Use a short peice of wire to jumper the main starter post to where the green wire was. It bypasses the starter button and small 4 post relay. It spark a little

It's even easier if you've got the old push button solenoid covers installed.  Yeap, I'm that old.  Hell, I've even kick started.

Real men had kick start only stroker motors with high compression. ;)
