New Aftermarket Radio -- Couldn't Find it in Search
« on: October 13, 2022, 01:37:26 PM »

A few months (maybe?) back there was a short thread about an upcoming aftermarket radio for the 98-13 vintage fairinged bikes.  The search tool has totally failed me.  Anyone remember a product name?

I think that was it.  Thanks Neal.  My radio cut out today.  Came back and continued working ok.  But it made me think about options.

Looks like a good option. I had Audio AV in a 12 sg. Couldn't see the display during daylight. I hated that. I would never buy that again. The 06-13 HD radios work on pre 06. Stuart

The new unit for 14 and later is coming out in November. I have one on pre-order for my '18 CVO RG. Says it works with Boom Amps, so maybe this new unit does also. This place has the pre-order so maybe they have info on your model as well. https://volunteeraudio.com/?fbclid=IwAR26X4VRJyn-Cyzh8BJkVItTh-Adck11iS2YCDqyaQ9A0xd2gGT1PeY1Yp0

That video is the first example I've seen actually on a bike.  It's a look that would take some getting used to.  Don't immediately hate it.  But definitely glad I saw it before it simply arrived in a box.  I do think it might be easier to adjust to against the really dark midnight red inner fairing on my old 2000 than it is against the more contrasting brighter color on the bike in the video.  The face might almost just blend in against that almost black background of my old bike.  Interesting.

Also pleased to see that a couple of the brethren have actually seen something.  Pre-orders and potential vaporware are always a concern.  Thanks guys.

Pre-ordered on a credit card.....if it's delayed and I don't want to wait I was told I could get a refund....if they screw around I can just stop the charge.

Screen grabbed this out of the video shared above.  I really like the conformal fit and how it is maximizing display size.  It's different enough to what we're just used to look at it takes some getting used to but I like the look.  I think I'm going to like it a whole lot more against that flat midnight red background on the old 2000 SERG than the contrast against the bright inner fairing as shown in the pic.  Even there I'm not sure without having seen it really straight on.

For those considering this on a newer CVO bike I might be concerned.  In the video I only saw connections for the stock or the standard harness.  As is common with the aftermarket stuff those radio aren't built with the small volume CVO bikes in mind and aren't built to accommodate the overlay harness that is there to run the amps and other accessories.  Never could get a complete look in the video but I didn't see it.  Will be something to pay close attention to.  Fortunately (for me) that doesn't apply on the old 2000 model but on later bikes it'll be worth watching out for.

I know it’s not a road glide but we put the Rockford radio in Kathy’s 13 street glide three years ago. She is really happy with it and the screen is really easy to read, also complete plug and play. I know it doesn’t work with bikes that have factory amps, what year did the cvo have amps installed from the factory?

Also keep in mind for the later model bikes that those radios DO NOT have there own  GPS receiver built in so no phone signal no mapping.

You can download Google maps for the area you want on your phone and just use carplay or Android auto

Thought about that a lot...but with Android auto you can download offline maps to your phone so no signal needed for the GPS to continue to work. Google maps is also always updating so no need to buy the GPS update any longer--however few and far between that they are.

As for Don's comment about CVO amps, etc...I know there is a module to make make the Boom2 amps work. I asked that question as well when I ordered. We'll see when it arrives--I have 60 days to send it back if they lied.....

Agreed.....that's exactly why I asked. They told me completely plug and play and will turn the amps on and everything will work. They said shipping in November....we'll see.....

Just found this pic of the back of the radio.  No connector for the overlay harness.  So if we're talking about a bike that ran amps, speakers, etc through the overlay harness (2nd big plug on the back of the radio) there is no indication this would work.  The RCA outputs give obvious connections for the world of aftermarket external hardware.  I'd want explicit confirmation that the Harley hardware that runs through the 2nd radio harness is going to play here.  The pic does not offer optimism.

That makes it more interesting Neal.  The rest of the aftermarket hasn't done anything like that or in any way accommodated for the overlay harness.  Will be really curious to see what they've done here to power the accessory side and drive all the outbound stuff.

It comes with a version of this. I'm guessing they may make the required harness in house...just a guess.

I’ve been doing research on the sound stream HDHU.9813RG and I’ve requested the installation guide along with the owners manual, as of yesterday I was told that they had one installed on a bike at Biketoberfest for display only, I’ve seen comments where they are available but can’t confirm that. I’m excited about the camera input(s) and what functions they have once installed such as do they have to be triggered to view or can they stay on constantly, recording would be nice but I don’t expect that right away.

My 09 would like this updated head unit and I’m talking with volunteer audio just because.  :orange:

TN, I'm really watching this thread and waiting for that head unit to come out.  Volunteer Audio looks to have his stuff together.  Once someone such as yourself gets an actual look at it a roadtrip to Tennessee may be in order to upgrade my 08 Roadglide.  It's not a CVO though.

If anyone has any questions, Jay at Volunteer audio in Tennessee seems to up on this radio. You can call him and he does return phone calls. I really like this option and it will work with 98-13 cvo road glides. Stuart.

Well sh*t MJ; I was really content not having to actually yet decide whether I wanted one of these or not.  I've pulled my radio and fixed its bad solder point (got lucky) so now it really is all about malicious desire rather than any kind of need.  The poor old Road Glide hasn't received anything significant for three or four years though.

Decisions, decisions...

I talked to Jay when I ordered mine and he said it would not work with the factory amps because every one they have looked at were wired different so no universal harness could be made. He said th C inCVO really meant custom. After talking for a while and discussing it further he said it could probably be figured out on a per bike basis but not a universal harness to cover all CVO's. My concern was having to drill more holes in the bags to run new wiring. I went ahead and got one in hand so now to see how good my stereo guy is! If he gets everything to work including the ipod I am going to be very impressed. Should know in the next few weeks if I am able to use stock amps and wiring. Will update after install.

deldago, I look forward to your review on the unit. The 2009 FLTRSE3 models have no factory external amps, ipods or any other special feature, there is an input on the faceplate I have used a time or three.

Just got done installing it and everything was plug and play! Took longer to get the damn fairing back on than it did to hook the radio up. Android auto works perfectly. Onlything I haven't figured out is if the ipod is going to work.

Played with it enough to know if it has an AVC function that works well as your ride?

Yes sir, they provided a splitter that plugs into both harnesses and everything is running through the front and rear saddlebag amps. Sounds much better than the Harmon Cardin stock radio. I have not tried the AVC as it is currently 17 degrees in Ohio. Still trying to figure out the ipod but if it doesn't work it would not be a big deal as I stream XM from my phone with bluetooth. The Android auto works perfectly with the phone plugged into the USB cord that I routed into the left glove box. It even charges the phone while connected.

Damn you Brad. I had already convinced myself that I don't need to upgrade the RF unit in my '12. Will have to wait a few months until you can get it out to ride and see if sun glare is an issue on that unit.

Here I'm trying to replace my HK head unit because of the backlight issue at night.  Found a used on in TX and now after seeing this, I might upgrade my '09 with just front speakers and the J&W amp.

I see Note Cycles, https://notecycles.com/products/soundstream-reserve-harley-davidson-head-unit-hdhu-9813rg-1998-2013-road-glide?msclkid=f670c39d73491e337404a07d1e3cb8a7&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=**LP%20DSA%20-%20Categories&utm_term=soundstream&utm_content=SoundStream has them at $999.00 + $65 for the XM antenna and a wireless Apple Carplay or Android Carplay option of $160.  Might be a bit cheaper than Volunteer Audio.

I'll follow with bated breath... :)

I can't say I have heard of them, but I can say Volunteer Audio will stand behind and assist on everything they sell. When the '14 and up radio came out, they even helped a guy from France that didn't buy the radio from them!! I spoke with the owner when working out a bug with the amp turn on for my '18 SERG. That was at 8:00 at night.....He has since posted a video with the settings for the fix. Going with another company would depend on the cost difference I guess.

That is what I paid from Volunteer radio, $999 with free shipping. Had it in 3 days.

Now that you've had a bit more time to give it a once over, how's it going?  With the warm days here and there, have you had the bike out to see how well it shows up in the sunlight?  I'm not sure if $1k is worth it for me or not.  It would be great to use the GPS off the iPhone and stream etc via XM.

Any further report would be greatly appreciated... :)

The only time the glare is really bad is when the sun is directly behing you. I can move my head a little to one side if I really need to see clearly. Wish they would have stood the screen up a little more vertical as the problem seems to be more the up angle of the screen. It does not have speed compensated volume which is kind of a bummer but something I can live without. After getting out for a few rides I am really loving the versatility of having everything built in. I recently downloaded Waze to my phone and wasn't even using it and it warned me of police ahead. Sure enough about 1/4 mile down the road there he was hiding in the weeds. I did forget to hook the mike up and after using it I will pull the fairing and run it into the same glove box as the charge port just to be able to use it when stopped. I may also add the rear camera as it would be useful when the tourpack and wife are on the bike it would help backing in to a curb spot parking. The google maps are great as you can use a traditional white background or a satellite image that really shows the terrain. When I first turned it on and zoomed in I could make out the color on my truck parked in the driveway.Using my wife's subsciption to XM allows me free access to it as soon as I plug the phone in it starts automatically. So far I am very happy with it. If anyone has any specific questions let me know and I will try to get an answer.

initial thoughts after a few short trips

i like the size and brightness of the screen
the 13 band EQ is nice for making adjustments

radio reception isnt great ( it seemed fine before i put the nose on, maybe i loosened up the antenna plug )
not having AVC will take some getting used to but is not a show stopper for me

its a road glide so reaching the face of the radio while riding is still a challenge
for my normal use case of staying on car play with waze open and a stream app running in the background make it very easy to use this radio and the only thing i'm doing is volume up and volume down on the left thumb.

i did learn that pushing in on left thumb is mute on/off could come in handy to silence the unit for a minute when stopped instead of volume down/up

right thumb works as expected to change modes or go to next/prev track on the apps

I think I was confused... So what's new???

I see the "MIRROR" option is the only option and it does the two CarPlay iOS and Android via Bluetooth, or something other, but no cable to do it.  I see it has Bluetooth, sorry... :(

Not having AVC was a deal breaker for me since I’m always riding 2up. I put a Bluetooth system on my old Road King and I’m using an app called Volumatic. Not sure it it’s CarPlay friendly but might be worth a try. Let us know if you decide to try it

I have spoken with a few people starting with Volunteer audio and going up the chain and I was told that  soundstream was working on a bluetooth output function for the new head units,  there has been lots of request/interest from consumers for this feature, no-one could tell me if this will be a separate add-on module or built into the head unit itself.

Harley has the WHIM but it’s definitely proprietary, most aftermarket bluetooth modules I found while searching was mono output and just overall a barebones unit, I’m far from an audiophile.

Thanks Phil.  I listen to music so little while riding that the audio/radio itself is not a strong incentive.  The rest of the app ecosystem and utility would be why (and just that it looks kind of cool).  But I would prefer the output to earbuds or in-helmet speakers for at least the nav outputs.  So I can save my 2 dollars for now while waiting to see if there is an update  :2vrolijk_21: .

Neal,

Just got back from my HD dealership and I believe he's going to be able to sell me my Soundstream head unit.  That way I get to use my HD VISA Harley Bucks to help purchase it... :)

I noticed that you mentioned you gave up and just pulled your headlamp assembly to get your fairing off. I have an aftermarket LED headlamp assembly and I found it VERY HARD to remove the fairing and install the fairing.

How do you pull the headlamp assembly without pulling the fairing?  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dan

On several different Road Glides that's my cheat for reassembly.  Sometimes just can't shove it all back together.  Pull the headlight so can see what's going on inside.  Never had any great issue getting a fairing off though.  At least not when I hadn't missed a screw.

I think one of my issues with the HK head unit not lighting up is that I beat the chit out of it trying to re-install the fairing.  The face plate has to be pushed at one of the corners to make the display light up.

I can't remember when I upgraded to the Chinese LED headlight, that it could be taken out from the outside.  I remember it as having to be installed from the inside, at least that's how I remember it.  I also kind of remember that there's an aluminium finned housing, possibly a power supply etc, that hit the clip that catches the fairing. It's been a few years now... :)

Also Neal, did you use any type of slippery stuff around the fairing opening before you slid the new head unit into place?  I was just thinking that some slippery stuff could be advantageous.

Just wondering... :)

The headlight pushes in from the outside Dan.  The squeeze tabs on the adjuster part pushes in the housing.

How did you manage that with that brace attached to the inner fairing to support the weight of the lights?

just removed the 4 screws from each light, that was the bulk of the weight
and then i could see what i was doing in there

Ordered my new HDHU.9813RG radio today through the local HD dealership.  It's coming from Crutchfield, but still at the $999.99 price point.  Got to use my Harley Bucks from our VISA card rewards.  That cut the price in half... :)

Looking forward to the install.  AND, I'll pull my LED headlights just to be on the safe side and I know it will go LOTS easier.

I may have some ???? as I get deeper into the install etc.

Have a great weekend guys!

Had the Rockford Fosgate Boom installed. It sounded great compared to the old style Hog Tunes in my 2017. However there was so much Trebble and not a lot of base which is a common complaint. I just switched over to SOUNDZ 800 amp 6 speaker system in my 2020 RG limited and it sounds overall much better. I am not saying it is the best in world but at least it has a little thump and trust me volume 2/3 is all you ever need.

Several friends have gone with there system and this is not an advertisement just an FYI. You can look SOUNDZ up on the internet.

In general, I'm liking the new Soundstream head unit.

BUT...

The sound quality in my shop is good with my J&M 6.5" speakers and the later J&M amp for the SERG.  But at highway speeds, the sound quality is really terrible... :(

I can turn up the volume until almost full and still cannot hear it.  My Harmon Kardon unit was solid at highway speeds and quality of sound was also very good.

Anyone else have a dislike for the Soundstream HUHD9813.RG???

Hope I can get this working the way it should.  Also out in the sunlight, the equalizer is faded out by the sun, can't see any bar or graph.  I can read POP, JAZZ, etc.

Ideas?

Thanks, Dan

This could be completely incorrect or not even apply to this particular radio..but it is worth bringing up. When I put in the HDHU14si and connected to my Boom2 Audio the sound was horrible....until I set the BIN code in the Soundstream unit. Not sure if this applies to all amps, but it made a world of difference on my install. Setting it is at 4:25 in this video.....Just guessing that the firmware may be close and just in a different size package.

It may be worth a look. If not, I would contact the vendor you bought it from for help. it should absolutely not sound worse than the stock one.

Sounds exactly like my issues, but I don't have Boom or the later Rushmore style head unit, only as originally installed with the bike, Harmon Kardon.

Yep, sounds great in the shop, but terrible on the road.

Anyone else have the older HK head unit that's replaced it with the new Soundstream head unit?  Do you have the same issues?

Thanks mjb for the tip.

I know you have the older unit......but I was thinking that BIN code may be in the Soundstream and needs to be set for the J&M amp....... :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

I went through all of the screens on the Soundstream and tried all sorts of button combinations, but there does not seem to be a setup BIN screen on the HDRU9813-RG unit.

The symptoms are exactly the same as in the video posted above.  Even are moderate speeds on the road, can hear fairly decently.  But at anything upwards of 60+ mph, forget it.

Hopefully someone will have gone through this and can assist in the setup etc.

Thanks again everyone!

Who did you buy the unit from?? Did you try contacting them??

Got it through my local HD dealership.  They bought it through Crutchfield. I called Crutchfield and they knew nothing about the issue I explained to them.  They hadn't even heard about the issue with the 14+ and the BIN.  They're mainly home entertainment oriented.

I've sent an email to Soundstream in CA about my problem.  I have J&M 6.5" (non Rokker) speakers and their JMAA-1800HC06 180w Performance Series Amp Kit.  This has worked flawlessly with my HK head unit for almost 10 years.

I may have something soon from Soundstream.  I can't believe others haven't had this issue.  I'm sure it has something to do with my J&M amp, but all of the wiring just plug and play with the harness they supplied and my HD harness from the factory.  But since there doesn't seem to be any avenue to "change" the EQ settings in the Soundstream as in the 14+ unit, I may have to rewire my speakers/amp for this head unit.  Who knows at this point.

Don, I'm sure it will get figured out soon.  I do really like the new system, but as the Volunteer Audio owner said, you just cannot hear clearly and no amount of volume or in fact changing the EQ presets, POP, JAZZ, etc, has no effect on highway speed sound, but does do what it's supposed to do in the garage etc.

You know, the worst case about all of this... is that I will have to take the fairing off again and reinstall it.  This is REALLY A PAIN IN THE ARSE FOR SURE!

Definitely hopes it's just a "settings" solution of some type Dan.  I'm not pulling the trigger until more is known though.  My old Road Glide has an old also plug and play Hawg Wired amp installed.  It's been installed a long long time but it still works and if there's anything to do to make these radios work with aftermarket amps would want to know beforehand.  Good luck and will keep watching here.

Dan,

PrecisionPower/Soundstream in LA CA is who I ended up talking with while doing my due diligence on the new headunits. I simply ask to speak with someone about tech advise concerning the new soundstream head units for HD and I was delighted to speak with someone that seemed to have the knowledge and was forthcoming with my questions to a point. I looked for my notes and they must be in a safe place to find another day, I can’t recall his name offhand.

Just throwing this out there in hope it will be of some assistance.

TN, thanks!  Hoping to hear from someone tomorrow about my issue.  If no e-mail, I'll try your number listed.

Thanks again, Dan

You can also try calling Volunteer Audio..Jay, the owner is a great guy and will help you if he can. I worked with him on the issue he made the video about. I have heard of him helping other people with issues even when they didn't buy the original unit from him!!

Just talked with Soundstream.

I have the J&M 180 amp and their upgraded 6.5" speakers.  What I did originally was use speaker line level inputs to the amp as the HK head unit has no RCA outputs.  He told me that the Soundstream is NOT compatible with an amp hooked up to the speaker line level inputs.

I now have to remove the front fairing again... PITA!!!!!  And convert over to all RCA outputs and inputs from the Soundstream to the J&M amp.  THEN I will be compatible, according to him.

So Don, I'm sure your older amp is also using your HK speaker outputs as line level inputs to your amp.  Your old amp "should" have RCA inputs and that's how you need to run them.

I will report back, but it will be a few days before I get up the nerve to attempt to remove the front fairing again... :(

Thanks all, Dan

Makes sense. About 35 years ago I was big into car audio and have forgotten over half of what I learned back then. We never used converters unless it was the only way to do it which in your case with the old radio, had to be done that way. Fwiw, Soundstream was one of the premier Amp manufacturers back then.

I'm not so sure Dan.  The amp that's in there has been in so long I've not had to see it for years.  It was advertised as a "plug and play" amp at the time and is now very well beyond anything HawgWired offers.  I don't remember RCA connectors on it though so I might be out the cost of a new amp if I chose to pursue the radio.  Since that amp has been in there for at least 10 years and probably closer to 12 or 13 it might be time to consider a change though....  (but it still works, dammit).

Okay, with the RCA direct from the Soundstream to the J&M 180 amp, it now works great.  I can crank it up to hear it while at freeway speeds.

The J&M amp came specifically for the old Harley HK head unit.  I had a harness that you plugged your speaker wires into and then it went into a "something" inside the harness and then came out as RCA's to the amp.  I took out the J&M harness and did the direct RCA's from the head to the amp and it was all good.

Here are a few pictures of my installation.  Very tight, but it gets it done.

So glad it was an easy fix Dan.  Has to be something of a relief knowing not just that it should work but that it actually does.

I found the manual to my old amp from HawgWired.  The amp shows a remote input for outputs from an aftermarket radio.  Not completely trusting docs from what was then a new product from a relatively new company I also went back through the install pics and found what I'd taken when the amp was installed.  Sure enough the input plug is there.  So (apparently) the option to make this change is still available if I'm so inclined.

So what are first impressions?  Nav from Carplay or Android works as one would expect?  You're way more into the audio than I am but that seems at least satisfactory now?  Any other surprises in the "cool" or "uncool" categories?

I am guessing they both use the same basic OS so I can say for the 14 and later model radio that Android auto looks just like it does in my 2022 truck....

Thanks Mike.  There is a LOT of similarity in Android Auto implementations but a little confirmation always helps.

For you or Dan or Neal who have been here already; does this radio have an aux input port to accept audio from external wired sources.  I've got the Garmin nav setup like the Softail Convertibles used installed on the windshields of both my Road Glide and my Road King.  I know it would become redundant but I'm not averse to backup systems (especially if they're already in place and don't cost anything new).

Good question....maybe Dan would know since he just did his......I enlarged his pic and didn't see any input for that.

Also, for anybody elese reading this thread.....personally I had an issue with mine that the screen is VERY hard to see in the sun. but that is 14 and later so I can't say what will be your experience. Also, I found the response from the joystick when switching songs is slow.....But on the older bikes your choices are very limited so you take what you can get.

Yeah.....  perhaps it's just the pessimist (or realist) in me but advertising/marketing notwithstanding I never expect any screen to be even marginally effective when the sun is behind me.  Can't imagine a polarizing filter to do that kind of job and if it were just bright enough to overcome the sun's brightness itself the radio would fry my eyeballs (and I'm sure this would be bad for the day's ride).  So, screw it, nothing's perfect.  Well, nothing except a good ride.

Don,

i had the same question and was going to leave my GPS on the bike as we don't always ride with cell coverage.

there is a plug but its only for a mic, when answering a phone call.

i was able to Bluetooth my Garmin to the soundstream to get audio that way, but ultimately decide to remove the Garmin.

Thanks Neal.  Appreciate it.  The too occasional lack of cell coverage was part of my concern also.  I like backups.

Without a hardwired aux port I'd likely end up doing the same thing you did though.  That means I'd also end up replacing the windshield rather than leaving the current shield on there with useless GPS mounts installed.  Hmmm....

Okay, a bit more information for you Don.

I wear quite dark polarized sunglasses and so far on what have been beautiful riding days, not a cloud in the sky type days, I've not had any issues seeing my screen.  All different screens show up very nicely.... Except for the EQ screen.  All of the bars and setpoints disappear from view.

I've not used Apple Carplay much, in my new Ford F-350 some just to get a bit of a hang of it, but I'm not enamored with the less than user friendly means to get around on the MAPS screen etc., but that's probably normal for lots of GPS type head units.  You cannot just touch the screen and move your location around or zoom in etc.  You have to use the 4-points compass icon and then that gives you an arrow on each screen side/top/bottom etc. to push with your finger.  To zoom in/out, you use the + - screen buttons.  I've been spoiled by how easy it is to use the maps on my iPhone.  I'll get used to it for sure.  When using Google Maps, the course lights up in blue as normal and the heading seems to be N/S on the screen always.  So, your directional arrow is heading in the direction relative to N/S.  The little lady speaks very loudly and is quite easy to hear while riding at speed.  Cuts the music off and then talks.

I opted for a Bluetooth device to link my iPhone with the Soundstream rather than the hardwire USB as shipped.  The one I bought has some lag in connecting, but once connected, it seems to have very little latency for screen manipulation etc.

Neal is correct, no inputs to the Soundstream other than the MIC for phone use.  I should have put the MIC on, but didn't.  I could have just tucked it in somewhere and I would have it if needed later.  But now it would require ANOTHER front fairing removal, and I've done that enough times lately to not want to do it again anytime soon... :)

Once logged into your phone, you only get about 10 or so of the apps off your phone.  I'm guessing that they are the embedded apps that are Apple only etc.  When running MAPS, you can split screen to see what XM is playing along with half the screen for the GPS.  That's nice.

I'm very happy with the new head unit.  I would highly recommend it for people that want a bit more music options and to have GPS on the bike and not on your phone on the handlebars.  For some, it's a grand waisted.  The ONLY reason I could have had to upgrade my '09 SERG, was the Rushmore upgrades and the new Harley screen head units.  Now for a grand, I have what I want and am very happy with bike's performance and comfort.  For an '09, still under 25k miles... :)

I've attached a picture of the inputs for the Soundstream.  Looks like if you have aftermarket amps and have four speakers, RCA connections would get one up and running very quickly.

Don't know how the Garmin is going to play out for your guys.  I almost did that for mine, but then we stopped riding as much and it didn't seem worthwhile for the money at the time.

If you're worried about the brightness of the screen in bright sunlight, I've not had any issues so far, except for the EQ screen as mentioned above.  Not to sound too redundant, I do really like this so far and it looks amazing, just as Harley should have done!

Thanks Dan.  Appreciate all that and the info helps.  FWIW I did make a purchase today.  Sort of....

Was at Best Buy and saw a cord that was two RCA connectors at one end (all I'd need) and 3.5mm stereo on the other.  That's the input on my old amplifier.  So grabbed it while it was in front of me just in case I'll need it someday :drink: .

This has been on my mind again the last few days (winter break?).  More for Neal than Dan since it looks like he setup a mic?

What functions of the radio are actually functionally controllable while moving?  I'm assuming the hand controls only run volume and other radio controls?  Working through the other apps on screen is touch?  What functions actually respond to the voice controls (if one is using a mic)?  And is the mic a hardwired device only or can you bluetooth (or even USB connect) earbuds or speakers and mic in a helmet?

Just how functional is all the potential function?

i believe the mic is only for phone calls.

hand controls are good for volume, track up/down, changing inputs

i used mostly pandora and sirruis/xm with an app not over the air

screen was typically on Waze

So even with mic no voice systems control.  For nav and other android auto/carplay functions it's what you set before you roll unless you're willing to tap the screen while riding?

I can swap between screens while riding and the NAV voice comes through the speakers just like in a car.  I like the split screen with NAV and your source showing all the time.  I bought a Bluetooth module and like my iPhone through that to the radio head unit.

Once I got to the RCA's for the input to the amp versus the speaker wires like what I had for my HD HK radio to amp, it works fine now and the volume is good too.

I really like the new head unit, a LOT!  The "ONLY" reason I ever thought about upgrading my CVO, was when the new '15 came out with the Rushmore audio system with NAV.  Granted this is not a NAV head unit, but with the Apple CarPlay, it works just as good.  There's a bit of a lag hooking up when I start up, but I'm guessing that's because of my Bluetooth and NOT being hard wired via USB.  This way I have my RAM mount with the QI charger module and hard wired that to my main power supply.  Then just slip in the iPhone and not additional wiring needed.

I'm sure you'll like it Don.  What's another grand in the whole scope of it??? :)

Happy New Year everyone!

Dan

I am still thinking about it Dan.  For just a bit the idea of a new bike percolated.  Then I just wasn't interested enough.  Still like the old one better.  Also noticed that, at least for the moment, the radios were on sale for $200 off.  Now I'll probably think about it too long and miss the sale.

I wish the radios did a bit more than they did.  But there's a lot that they do that I'd like.  Decisions decisions.....

Well.... nuts.

The later model's radios were on sale for a bigger discount and cheaper price than were the 1998-2013 versions.  This annoyed me (a little).  So to heck with it; for now.  There will be another sale.

The rep at Volunteer told me no.  It's been awhile since I asked but that was the answer.

By not being quick here (ok, just never made up my mind) might have ended up un-screwing up in reverse.  There's now a competitive product to the SoundStream radio and the competitor has wireless Android Auto and wireless CarPlay built in.  Whether the new option ends up bring down the cost on both after a time because there's now a bit of competition or if the new one just proves to offer more facility for similar money at least there's an option.  Now I've got a reason to wait even longer...

I've been seeing the hype about this new unit. Being an android guy it intrigues me for my '12. I already have full aftermarket RF setup including the head unit so it should be a pretty easy swap (other than fighting that damn outer fairing). Lemme know how it works out for ya Don.

If or when I pull the trigger will definitely share thoughts.  It's not a today or to-this-month-or-next thing though.  Damn, got to wait and see if competition makes either manufacturer blink and have a sale!  :drink:
