Hello from Iraq
« on: October 27, 2008, 05:11:05 PM »

Hello from Iraq,

I just order a 09 Springer, and I cannot wait to take delivery in Jan 09 when I'm on mid-tour leave. I was hoping I could get some advance on proper break-in.

I would suggest that you break it in like the owners manuel suggest.  May not be the best way, but as long as you do what Harley says - the dealer can't claim you did something wrong if a warranty issue comes up.

Hello from Iraq,

I just order a 09 Springer, and I cannot wait to take delivery in Jan 09 when I'm on mid-tour leave. I was hoping I could get some advance on proper break-in.

Redman - First of all, welcome aboard and thanks so much for serving your country! We are honored and blessed to have you join us!

You said above "I was hoping I could get some advance on proper break-in." Just wanted you to know I would be happy to break in your bike for you - lol.

Assuming you really meant 'advice' and you certainly came to the right place for that! Not only will you get advice on proper break-in but you will also get tons of assistance in tricking out your ride until everything of value you currently own has been sold and turned into either chrome, horsepower, riding gadgetry or stylish accessories!

I have a particular fondness for this years CVO Springer myself. What color did you order? Have seen the yellow and the blue and they both look fantastic! Did you get the yellow, blue or black?

Stay safe over there and know we are praying for your safe return!

Welcome, thanks for your service.

Follow the MOC's recommendations,  and have your dealer do the first service.  Make sure you have them check out any concerns you may have, for documentation sake if nothing else.

Most of all have fun and enjoy the ride.

First I would like to thank everybody for there support. I'm on my third tour in Iraq and currently I'm in month 1 of a 12 month deployment in the Diyala province. I'll try to keep my head down and a$$ out of trouble. But since I have to actually see the bad guys before I can engage them that might be a problem. LOL. Anyways I'm stationed in Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.  So are riding season is pretty much late May through early October.  I ended up ordering the cobalt candy blue. I hope I picked the right color, I have never actullay seen this model in person.
Thanks again to everybody.

You can't go wrong with that color, it's hot.   The best color this year in the springer, in my opinion of course.

I appreciate all your doing for us over there.  I hope your deployment goes well and you make it home safely so you can ride your new bike.  If you ever make it down to Georgia, let me buy you a beer!  THANKS! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

That's awesome!  When/where are you going on mid-tour?

Following the manual for break in really isn't that difficult.  Keeping it under the recommended RPMs will still let you go fast enough to ride on the interstate.  You just won't be hammering the throttle, not just yet anyway.

Redman,

I've seen a few of the candy cobalt springers and they look OUTSTANDING and I haven't even seen one in the sun yet. That always seems to add another dimension. My wife's name is Kandy and she raises springer spaniels so I've been working real hard on convincing her this should be her next bike!

Stay safe!

Ditto times ten!!  Here's the best article I've seen re break in:  http://mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
Opinions do vary here but this technique makes sense to me and has seemed to work.

Welcome to the site.  I just redeployed 2 months ago myself and spent a fair amount of time flying around the DRV.  I ordered an 08 SERK last fall through my local AAFES dealer in Germany and picked it up on R&R in May.  Made for a nice break from the sand and dust of Balad.

Welcome.  Aim high theyre ridin camels.  Be safe.  The book says dont ride at constant speeds the first 500 miles.  I also did not exceed 3,500 rpm under 500 miles and not over 5,000 rpm to 1,000 miles.  After that ride it!

Welcome to the site!  Your new bike will definitely be something to look forward to after your deployment.

Hopefully, following your redeployment you will PCS to warmer climes so you can enjoy a longer riding season than what Fairbanks has to offer.

My son is with 1/40Cav ABN (Spartans) at Ft Richardson, was recently 'stop-lost', and will be deploying soon for his third tour.  During his last tour he was considering buying a Harley V-Rod thru AAFES, but the selection of bikes was sparse.  Instead, I told him to 'hold that thought', and after his unit returned last December, he took Christmas leave and found a 2008 105th Anniv V-Rod next to the Christmas tree with his name on it.  As a father of a soldier, words cannot describe the feeling during those rare opportunities when we can ride together.

You guys are 'chit-hot', the best of the best that this country has to offer, another "Greatest Generation" in the making.  Stay safe, come home to us, and enjoy your new bike.  You deserve it!

Redman09,
As oft repeated, THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!!  My son just came back from the "triangle" after 13 mos.  Looks like he gets to go back for #4 next fall.  The superiors are really f***-ing up over there with their stupid ROE's and such.  Too many good guys getting shot for no reason at all, other than total lack of brains by their superiors.

As for breakin- the posting of vary the speeds, nothing over 3500 for the first 500 and nothing over 5000 for the first 1000 should fit what your manual will tell you.  Only thing I'd add would be to make sure you've got some heat headed into the motor (I always feel the rocker boxes for heat- as soon as I can feel a little, I ride).  This allows for expansion of the metals without the stress of pushing the bike down the road.  Seems to make her run better down the road.

Since our son-in-law joined our family, it has reminded us every holiday of the men & women serving our country over seas. Be safe, god be with you, and I can't wait to hear of your thoughts on your new ride when you get back home.

I enjoy my 09 SE Springer every day, mine is the Black Diamond with Emerald Ice Flames. And anyone can tell you, pictures don't do them justice, the paint up close with the light shiningon them brings out so much more in person.

Welcome to the CVO site!  We all appreciate your service and think of you guys daily in our prayers.  I bought the 2008 CVO springer in late march after spending two years in Kandahar, Afghanistan.  I'm lovin' it.  Watch your back and look forward to hearing about your bike when you pick it up.

Greeting from Djibouti,
Congrats on your new ride. I know just what you are going through. Doing a tour in Djibouti and ordered my SEUC4 sight unseen. I had been researching and was looking at getting an Ultra Classic while overseas thru the military exchange program, but when the SEUC4 came available I jumped on it. Can't wait to get back and ride. Be safe.

Hello from Iraq,

I just order a 09 Springer, and I cannot wait to take delivery in Jan 09 when I'm on mid-tour leave. I was hoping I could get some advance on proper break-in.

Welcome to the site and return home with honor. When home don't do anything stupid on your new bike. Maintain a situational awareness in everything you do here just as you've done in Iraq. From a VN vet to another younger warrior, thanks for serving.
