Rivera 10/84 ring gear upgrade ? and jack shaft kit install
« on: March 02, 2009, 06:33:49 PM »

I'm putting a Reivera 10/84 ring gear conversion kit in my bike. The instructions leave it up to the installer as to which way the bevel goes.

From this page

http://www.riveraengineering.com/RING_GEAR-CHAIN_DRIVE_INSTRUCTIONS.pdf

3. Mount the Rivera Primo replacement starter ring gear on the clutch basket so that either the
beveled or the flat side of the ring gear faces inward, towards the starter, when the clutch basket
is re-installed.*

* Use of either the beveled or flat side of the ring gear is up to the discretion of the end user.

Any opinions as to which way this would be best?

Also doing the jack shaft upgrade.

Will post pics and install if there is a want.

Wierd, just did mine, forget the mfg, but it said bevel in.  Can't figure why you would do it the other way. Does make major differnce starting.

I have always done them bevel in, just makes more sense to do it this way.

Bevel out.The kit was designed to be used with a belt drive primary. The bevel moved it away from the belt. I originally mounted mine with bevel in and I felt the gear engagement was not as crisp. I then turn it around with flat side in and I feel it works better. I feel with the bevel on the jack shaft gear and the bevel on the ring gear may cause teeth to slip by before engagement.

When I turned the ring around one of the attachment allen bolt heads broke off very easily. I'm very lucky I missed a huge failure. I bought new 8 grade bolts when I installed with flat side in.

Bob (Boatman) happens to be very well up on this one. He thought the better way was to have the bevel away from the bendix gear. I did it the same way he did and it's been just fine.   Starts right up and no "spin out" noise. You can ask him on here if you have any questions. He replies in a hurry. :)

I didnt use a Rivera version, but I did install a 10/84 kit in Momma's old FXDL....

I believe it was from Compufire... and the instructions state beveled edge to face away from starter

http://www.compufire.com/pdf-instructions/INSTALLATION%20INSTRUCTIONS-ring-gear.pdf (States beveled edge to face away from starter)

So... draw your own conclusions...

Oh... I had similar issues with mounting hardware breaking.

Been reading this post and your other one about the upgrades you are planning.  I too had starting issues - especially when hot.  Got worse after the Zippers 575 cams.  I went with the Rivera 10/84 kit (bevel out!) and per their instruction (over the phone) I shimmed the pinion gear out to their spec.  Can't remember what it was but if you call them they can tell you what it is.  Also replaced the battery cables with Yoopers cables.

MUCH better now.  Over 4K since the change and not a single issue with starting hot or cold.

Hope this helps.

Looks like Comp-u-Fire - Broken screw = 2
                      Rivera - Broken screw = 0

Guess I won't worry about changing out the screws.

Thanks.

If you talk with John at Rivera he will tell you bevel is out for chain setup and in for belt drive... I have the 9 tooth pinion and 66 tooth ring gear.. Bevel is out and no problems... Air gap is .80 to .150...

I would think that they need to share that in the instructions.

Multiple start stops (including s couple of stalls) yesterday and the new starter parts are great.

Fairly quiet compared to what I had. Very solid sounding now too. Pinion jumps right in without grinding and the bike cranks over well.
I also had replaced my jack shaft and related parts as a precaution.

The real test will be on the 90-100 days after stopping for gas.

I would recommend the 10-84 conversion.

It will do you a fine job Duane.  HDBrad and 1711Tab got the same info from Rivera as I did.  Compufire also states to have the bevel away from the pinion.  The pinion is tapered/beveled and let's it go deep into the ringear on the flat side.  Rivera's instructions are poor and hard to get on the phone also.

Like I have said before, my starter sounds like a Honda cranking it is that smooth (hot/cold no difference).    :2vrolijk_21:

I wouldn't go that far, my riding buddy has a honda sabre and it just downright funny when starting  ;D

I'm very happy that I did the conversion too. Wasn't too big a job either, once the clutch was pulled off.

Anything sounds better than that god awful screech/grind sound.  Glad everyone is happy.
