Looking to buy Black/orange 2000 FLTRSEI
« on: May 17, 2009, 09:19:28 PM »

 :pepper:
Hi, I am a newer rider. I found a Black/Orange 2000 FLTRSEI locally with 14K that is a one owner bike, very well cared for that I like and will most likely purchase tomorrow. I rode the bike today and really liked it.

I am a novice to H-D and would welcome any comments for or against this purchase or just general info regarding a 2000 screaming eagle road glide.

Thanks all!!  Mike

Great bikes.  The CD player can be problematic (it's in the tour pak in case you didn't look).  Aside from that no system problems.  Just really nice bikes.

Is it all there?  If it's missing the bike cover and its bag they are nearly impossible to replace.

Good luck.

Thank you both for your quick replies. I did not notice a CD player in the tour pack but it should be there. I will look tomorrow. As far as the cover and the bag I do not beleive it is included but will follow up. Thanks again. This is very helpful. Mike

Radio in the fairing still have a tape player?  If so it's likely stock.  The toup pak mounted CD deck gave lots of problems.  Not that uncommon for them to be removed.  Hopefully it's there.  They're actually not that tough to fix most of the time.

What's it going to cost to buy it?

Yes it still has a tape player. I do not remember a CD player in the tour pack. I will look tomorrow.

I will likely get it for 15K. I w of course would like to pay less but my research showed that 15 is actually a good price especiall for a bike with 14,000 miles. What do you think? I was actually between a street glide and a road glide. I was not looking for a screaming eagle bike but when it appeared I ikebecame interested. But I like to do my do diligence prior to actually purchasing. Mike

Ok that explains why it is probably not there. It is being sold as is so far with out books or a cover. It is an exceptionally clean and well cared for bike but you know how it is when you buy something that you do not have a lot of knowledge of. I just want to hear a few people say that they really like the bike and that it is still desireable and a good value. Mike

Crap, had a charcoal bike in my head for some reason.  Had to look back to see what we were talking about.  My bad.

Same holds true on the cover for a 2000 model.  There was no gold CVO key for these early models.  So nothing missing there.  Model specific emblems on the air cleaner, tour pak and dash.  You want those to be in good shape too.  Nearly ten years old now those aren't going to be around much longer.

Thanks again to all. Again just hoping for some words of wisdom. I will look for the official cover but  if I can not find one I'm sure that I can get an aftermarket cover that will fit the bike. Otherwise it seems to me that the 2000 FLTRSEI 's are solid and mechanically sound. This will give me a chance to ride a fun and unique motorcycle. Looking forward to it. Mike

Carb or fuel injected? Make sure you get the shark fin tail pipes if the owner still has them.

The SERGs were all FI bikes AJ.  Though with the concern some have over the old Marelli systems not eveyone would agree that's a good thing.

Early 2000 model bikes still had the cam bearing concern also.  But at 14k+ miles the bike is probably ok.  The wandering idle issue on the Marelli bikes really is addressable.  Short of parts being unavailable on some future date I'd not consider turning an M&M bike in to a carb'd bike.  Marelli worked out if you know how to talk to it.

If you get the bike and then feel the need to get a factory parts manual (always a good idea) don't take that manual as gospel.  The 2000 parts manual has lots of errors in it.  Several are typos and several others are indirect supercessions that don't follow the normal nomenclature.  Those are mostly on painted parts.  But be prepared to do a little homework occasionally if at first a part number is reported to be bad or no longer available.

ok, my turn, since you started out by saying you were new to HD. i would stay away from a 2000 anything.
Get a new bike for your first one, no need to go CVO yet. take some time and learn all the HDisms. maintain the warranty, do all the service as recommended. when you can, do them yourself.
I'll guarantee this 2000 will require some wrenching and unless your very familiar with HD & CVO it'll cost you more in the long run. JMO. I don't want to see him burn out on HD on his first bike.

Good point Larry....... but IF the bike has been maintained as it sounds like it has, with low mile on it. I don't see how he can go wrong. Your point is good new bike = Warranty!!!, old bike = possible problems. To me it's a toss up. JMO It sounds like 2th has done a little digging on this bike, heck he started out by asking for advice from us on CVOH...... um huh, scratch that!  :huepfenjump3: Hope it works out for you 2thplumber, oh yea.... LarryB and Ditch... Thanks for your comments. I just spoke to a friend who has many years of experience with HD. He told me the same thing. Even though this bike appears to be well maintained there could be issues. Plus the bike does not come with service records, the cover, bag, or liners. It appears to be very well maintained by someone who was willing to work on the bike. I'm not sure that is me. I'm thinking  :nervous: You guy are great!!

Welcome to the group. I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago and was torn between a new Road Glide or a 00 SERG. I went with the 00 and have been very happy with it and would recommend you buy it. Its a very complete bike with features not found on the new ones that can add up expenses real quick. Price out the Tour Pack, docking hardware, passenger back rest, rider back rest, lowers, and all the chrome goodies you won't find on a new bike and you will find it is a great deal. The new SE's overheat, have gasket problems, and still need most of the stuff mentioned above. I have ridden many miles with friends with the newer SE's and believe me there is no issue with power the 00's will pull with any new stock SE.
If you look at a 01 the only difference is the CD deck in the Tour Pack (bad idea) and chrome rims. The manuals, shark fin end caps and cover show up on ebay every once in a while and I have managed to stock replacements for them all.

All twin cams have problems with the cam chain tensioners so replace them with gear driven cams at 25K or so and I don't think you will ever regret purchasing a low mile 00 SERG. The new ones are great bikes and sure a six speed, bigger tank, and abs are nice but not enough for me to pull the trigger for one. Maybe when they come out with a wet motor I'll change my mind.  Doc

I have never used the backrests so that wouldn't be an issue with me, and the original manual shows up on ebay all the time. Now that you are informed of what a complete bike should look like you can ask owner for the items and if not available use it as a bargaining chip for a lower price. I did that and all of a sudden the cover and manual showed up plus a couple of never used helmets. Two years ago I paid 19K for mine with 6500 miles, but complete. Since then I've added pasenger flood boards and gear drive cams for about 2500. If you could get him down to 12500 or 13000 because the "tensioners will need replacing and the bikes not complete" and times are tough....you would have a killer deal for the Screaming Eagle that started it all.  Doc

I gave $12.5 for my 2000 just over a year ago.  It was all there with mileage in the teens but I knew it was a steal at the time.  The popularity of the new 09 SERGs has actually boosted interest in the old ones enough that used prices seemed to have firmed up a bit.  Missing the things that the bike you're looking at is missing I'd think it should sell for a bit less.  But he's not that far from what they've doing in the last year.

As for the older bikes being less problematic than the new ones Harley's QC unfortunately doesn't make that ring true.  Many of the recent models have had systemic problems.  The 2000 bike should at least have had whatever issues it had (if any) worked through.  There will be maintenance of course.  It's a nearly 10 year old vehicle after all.  But it's a nearly 10 year old vehicle with really only a bit more than a year's worth of miles on it.

Good luck whichever way you go.  Part of buying a Harley is often your reaction to the bike.  What it looks like; to you.  If you like the look of the classic SERGs there's really never been anything else in the lineup that does the same thing.  Hope you enjoy whatever you end up with.

All twin cams have problems with the cam chain tensioners so replace them with gear driven cams at 25K

Doc is right about this, that's for sure

Doc, I agree with what you said but... with no lowers I would negotiate a LOT harder. That alone would put me in the 12.5K range.

I missed that also.  Definitely south of $12.5 without lowers.  Though they'd not be all that hard to replace.  All one color after all.  The part numbers to order new are still in the system (or at least they were a few months ago).  But I'd hit eBay for cores and just get them painted to match.  Be much cheaper.

Even if they only cost $1k apiece to replace, painted to match, you'd have to knock off $3.5 ~ $4K for the aggravation factor of having to replace them.

More.  Lots more.  Remember, have to get the fairing caps too.  And two screws and a nut.  And those support brackets.  Chit, the owner will be be paying someone to take the bike before long :huepfenlol2: !

I got my lowers on ebay for 250.00 + 59.00 for the caps. wasted $ on quick detach, and say, 450.00 for paint, oh, and 300.00 for glove boxes, waste of money.

...except in the winter or if you get cought in the rain. Between the fixed fairing and the lowers your legs stay dry and warm. The quick detach will not work on the 00 lowers and unfortunatley they have no vents for the warm weather. I imagine the soft lowers would work just as well, but haven't tried them.

I'm getting the feeling this may be a salvage bike, there is just too much stuff missing. Now we are down to 5-6K  :-\   Doc

:dankk2: Thanks to all of you I learned a lot. I spoke to the seller, explained my concerns and what I was willing to pay. The seller obviously has not visited this forum i.e. the deal is off. I was not willing to over pay for an incomplete bike.  :smilie_daumenneg: I am now very interested in a proper 2000/2001 SERG and will start looking for one that has not been disassembled and parted out.  :wall:  Hopefully it will not be like hitting a brick wall. Thanks again. You all saved me a lot of disappointment(and $). I will report back when I have good news. Mike

These show up with some regularity.  A little diligence should pay off in without too much delay.  I was only looking for eight years.  But I wasn't especially diligent (and I was a picky bitch).
