insulted by local dealer on trade in on my CVO
« on: August 19, 2006, 09:23:48 AM »

2004 Yellow cvo deuce with screamin eagle II pipes, hd backrest, 06 high def headlight, 7000 miles, brand new rear tire, bike is in show condition not a scratch on it, $500.00 worth of LED lighting, six speed screamin eagle trans installed, hot toppers on EVERY bolt and nut, with all original parts in boxes. He had the nerve to offer me $15000.00 trade in value.  That tells me the bike depreciated 15,000.00 in less than 18 months.  Not bad will reconsider my 5th harley purchase. Hondas are not even depreciating that damn fast!!!!  Bad feeling in my gut as to where harley is headed now never thought i could say a bad thing about them in regards to retaining their value.  All work was performed by dealer.

The good days are over for Harley trade-in's. They are using Kelly Blue Book which shows trade as $15,300. NADA is higher but they want to take your bike for the lowest price. Sell at retail and buy at wholesale.. Retail on these bikes $20-23k. Try to retail it. CVO bikes have a much smaller market.
After you have owned a CVO bike, I guess you will try a newer CVO or go over to Big Dog or something like that.
I don't see any Harley I would have to have today.. My next bike will likely be a Big Dog..
I bought a FXSTDSE2 used last winter with 144 miles. Low $20k range.
Best of luck, sounds like you have a nice bike...

Never; NEVER, bought a bike I was going to ride for it's resale value.  If it maintained well that's just icing on the cake.  If you didn't buy a bike as expensive as those bikes were because you loved, but instead got it for any other reason the screwing you're sensing was self-inflicted.

I always thought the whole H-D line of BS about re-sale value was how you talked wifey into letting you buy the damn thing. Me, $7K ( 1984 FLH, my first brand new H-D) or $32K ( what my 03 SERK cost me new out the door)  I love em, can't live without em. One's good, two's better, three is damn near orgasmic !

Big B

PS
From what I'm seeing around Dago, you're dealer will re-sell your bike for $5-7k above what he's offering you for it. Post it here, E-bay, your local motorcycle trader publication for $22k or BO and see how it goes. Best of luck to you.

Gary, had a few bikes but never had any wives.  From the outside looking in, however, the process doesn't look that dissimilar.  Those that tinker and adjust and repair have a long and happy go of it.  Those that look for perfection right out of the box and never change seem to be trading in every few years.  So you must be on to something  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] .

When we went to sell our 98 Road King we found that the price we were willing to part with her at, was not at the same level of value on the street.  It is paid for, the insurance is cheap since we hardly ride it, and when one of our regular rides is down, we have a spare.  Brother comes in from out of town, he's got a fine ride.  So we found it cheaper to keep her.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Who hasn't heard all the who shot john about how Harleys hold their value or how they hold their value better than the "jap" bikes.  I enjoy the whole "Harley" thing as much as most, but I'll admit that my third bike is an '06 Yamaha FZ1 and I love to ride it.  I paid about $8,300.00 for it new and it will out perform anything Harley has to offer.  I will be able to enjoy the Yamaha for a year or two and maybe drop $2,000.00 to $3,000.00 when I sell it.  Try that these days with a Harley.

I currently have an '04 V-Rod on eBay and I'll be lucky if I only drop $9,000.00 or $10,000.00 on it after 2 years.  The way V-Rods are selling I could drop $12,000.00 to $14,000.00 on the bike.  I'll keep it before I take that kind of hit.

There are a lot of reasons to buy a Harley, but don't be taken in by the "HOLD THEIR RESALE" story.  Those days are past!

EBAY EBAY EBAY....You are stupid if you don't sell the bike on EBAY. I say this because I just sold two used Harley's and broke even on the first and MADE $3600 on the second. Both were Peace Officer special editions in immaculate condition and I did very well on them. I was offered $18,500 for my 06 Ultra at the stealer, I wanted to get $22K out of it on Ebay and it sold to the high bidder for $24,600  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] . That extra $$ paid the taxes on my 07 CVO and the remainder went directly into the new bike. It will cost you less than $100.00 to sell the bike and you will get thousands more than trade in.

I traded an 06 cuse for a plain old vanilla o7 ultra. I got 24k the dealer wrote a check fo the balance. Was just at the dealer the bike is on the way to Indiana from MA. I just wanted to make a comment on Harleys holding their value. I don't know how many other brands you had to pay x amount OVER Msrp but I think that is where some of the false value came from. When you can negotiate a price under MSRP  initially then the depreciation is on line. If you paid too much at the get go then it's a problem. Overall the CVO is the best value even ehen it comes to Blue Book. If I throw some of the regular chrome crap on the plain old vanilla Ultra it never becomes part of the book value. The smoke is going to clear soon and I bet there will be some competition between dealers to actually have to sell bikes instead of order taking.I hope I am around when some of these dealers that are 2k over MSRP actually have to sell at or under.
The dealers that were gouging prices sure won't see me . I do not want to  forget their uppitty attitudes..

I think that there's been a big change just since '02.  The snobby attitude that I got at my local dealer in August of 2002 led me to buy my first bike in 30 years and it was a Honda VTX1800C.  I got into the 100th anniversary thing in '03 and bought a Road King Classic from an MSRP dealer.  The same dealer that I thought of as snobby in '02 has sold some bikes at $500.00 under MSRP (I know from friends that have made purchases).  They're still thowing some dollars over MSRP on CVOs, but it ain't like it used to be.

I've come to appreciate the folks at Bumpus and feel that I've got friends there.  I guess that a dealership has to make business decisions and we may not always agree with their decisions.  I don't agree with paying for "shop supplies."  They might as well charge for "office supplies" and "bathroom supplies."  Somehow I think you have to develop a relationship with a dealer and learn who to talk to and how to talk to them to get where you want to be on products and services.

I think a lot of dealers have had to go through attitude adjustments and price adjustments on standard bikes.  I can sort of understand how they continue to go over MSRP on CVOs.  If they are only going to get two of a particular bike and have a waiting list for folks that want them, why sell at MSRP.  I've talked to dealers that are anywhere from $3000.00 to $5000.00 over MSRP on CVO bikes.  They are asking those prices because someone will probably pay them.  I just don't plan on it being me.

Hey, I think the whole Harley thing is a love/hate kind of relationship, but we all seem to keep supporting the MOCO.  I've never had a dealer anywhere give me a HOG discount and I've asked.  Maybe the HOG discount is a thing of the past.

There was a thread about a year or so ago here where people were listing their dealers that gave a HOG discount. There were more that did than did not. That is when and where I found out Bumpus was in the minority of dealers that did not.

If someone could shed some light on the old thread, I'd be interested.  I have had some out of town dealers say that they'd give the discount to local HOG members only.

I did receive a mailing from Bumpus today with a coupon for $20 off of a $100 purchase.  It seems that they've been putting these out on a regular basis.

That is a good question, if the dealers give the discount to out of town HOG members.  would guess only to local members. To tell the truth, I think Bumpus will start showing a different attitude shortly, when the Daytona dealer opens his new building in Southaven. A friend saw the

Not sure how Bruce Rossmeyer opening a dealership close to anyone is going to force lower prices and discounts. I have been to Bumpus twice on my way here and there, and as far as customer service is concerned, they are very high on my list. Sorry to hear the locals do not feel the same. Anyway, Rossmyer's  Destination Daytona charges huge premiums, expects you to park a mile away, walk through swampy land to buy stuff at 110 to 150% of what other dealers offer. I think the Rossnyer business model works in an enviroment like Daytona where you get a huge amount of people with too much discretionary income in a state of buyer's fever during the Rally weeks and a lot of inexperienced buyers wowed by the glitz, but I fail to see how this will work in an area like Memphis where folks have common sense and are smart about their money. Or anywhere else for that matter. I live in San Diego. There are a lot of folks with a lot of money in Southern California and the Rossmyer model would bomb big time here. It would bomb in LA too where Bartel's rules. Am I somehow missing something ????

For those dealers that do give discount I believe that is the standard practice (for local H.O.G. members only). From what I understand it's payback to membership for supporting the dealer and his H.O.G. chapter. I've even seen some restrictions placed on how the discount is given such as attending H.O.G. meetings with in last 30 days, and another dealer only has discount on day of H.O.G. meeting for his members. These options are used to encourage participation in the local. As we all know by being part of any organization similar to this normally it's ten percent of the people doing majority of the work. Wonder if that's how they came up w/the 10% discount? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

You maybe right, I was just thinking that competition would bear fruit. Until now we had only one real dealer within 120 miles (I guess Little Rock, Ar). I suppose it could just be wishful thinking on my part. Oh well, I can dream.

Just PRAY to the almighty that Rossmyer does not buy up existing dealerships or you'll be wishing you'd never said an unkind word about BUMPUS H-D.

... Rossmyer ...

I haven't found anybody that lives down here that likes Rossmeyer.  For all the business reasons you cite in your earlier posts.  I also agree that it works in Daytona where there is a constant flow of "rider tourism" dollars to be harvested, plus two annual mega-events.

I don't know what the economy is like in Memphis but if anything, if Rossmeyer sticks to his established business plan, I would think that it would actually improve business at other dealerships--that is unless they get the idea to follow suit and raise their prices to match his.

The chief criticism I hear down here is that Rossmeyer has no enthusiasm for motorcycles at all--it's all just money to him.  In all fairness, I'm not sure that's valid.  Isn't that ultimately what the MoCo itself is all about?  I mean if the guy can sell his stuff for inflated prices, who can blame him?

Anyway, folks down here don't like him but he sure rakes in the dough.

Red,
My old Bro " Animal " lives in Ormand Beach. He's all lathered up to buy a new 07 NightRod. His current ride is a 1998 Ultra Groundpounder 113" Rigid - - - go figure. Anyway, he's going to either St. Augustine or Ocala for the new bike. Absolutely refuses to buy even a 59 cent tail light screw from Fat Bastard ( " get in my wallet )

Listen to this one. I wanted to sell my 2004 FXSTDSE2 cobalt blue/black (only ran it two weeks) One dealer was going to do me a favor (Detroit HD) they were willing to give me a 2006 E Glide (told me 20000 OTD) or my FXSTDSE2 and 12000 dollars. So don't feel bad mine was only worth 8000.00. I will keep the bike as I got tired of being "low balled" and I will get the bagger either next year or year after.

I don't think 59 cents will get you a tail light screw at Rossmeyer's.  Move the decimal point ($5.90) and maybe. ;D

Anything's possible--Rossmeyer may recognize the Memphis market as different turf from Daytona, and adjust his business practices accordingly.

Just came from the dealer where there is a 07 blue SpringerSE on the floor. Went by to get a few small items (hundred dollars) and the SE caught my eye. As I was looking, a salesman walked up and said the usual, "that's a real beauty and she needs a good home". I told him I was not in the market because I have an 03 SED that I still thought was the best looking bike I'd ever seen BUT that blue springer looked like a close second to me. 110, 6 speed, warranty, hummmmmm [smiley=nixweiss.gif]. I asked for a best one shot trade price, knowing I would not part with my SED but curious.

There's a 2003 Black and Gold at one of our local dealerships with less than 500 miles on it. They are asking $20,000 for it. A great looking bike for that price. Just thought I would throw this in for added info.

I just don't see how anyone could part with that bike. I know I've tried, just can't do it.

After much thought, I've decided to keep her. I went by again today to take another look at the springer and I just can't help it, the SED is better looking. The salesman asked what it would take to do business, I told him price wasn't the problem. If you were offering an even trade, I'd have to pass because mine is better looking. He said I hate to admit it but I can't say you are wrong.
