Metzler 880s
« on: August 23, 2006, 04:07:48 PM »

ive heard about the good qualities of the 880s and decided to try them first hand. i noticed right away that the bike didnt follow all the ruts in the road and seemed to ride smoother. they seemed to make it a totaly different ride for the better. a lot of things other guys do i dont always get the same result and i really couldnt belive that tires could feel so different.  im sold on them and when your due give them a try- van g [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=banana.gif]

What Air pressure are you running in them? The HD dealers Around here only carry Dunflops so I had to get them installed at an indepent shop the sold me the tires at cost. I used them on my 01 the rear only lasted as lond as a dunflop 10K the front however lasted for 22K it was on the bike when I traded it in june. It is a Nice tire.

I crossed country on the harley tires and the 880's...the harley tire on the rear got way more miliege then the 880's...guess they get hotter on highway miles, and with the higher tire pressure it made for a rougher ride then the harley dunlops...I also disagree on the road stability, I think the 880's grabbed the grooves just as much as the dunlops......I will stick to dunlops next changeout.....ride-on,headpan

I switched to 880's 11000 km ago (6875 mi). Just got back from a 9100km (5687mi) road trip 2 up, pulling a trailer & the rear's shot!! Didn't notice a big difference in handling. I'm going back to the Dunlop's (my worst mileage was 12000 km (7500 mi) w/ them!

I consistently have gotten 11,000 to 12,000 miles on the rear with Dunlops.  Double that on the front.  And I ride mostly two up and often pull a Bushtec trailer.  Don't know what I'm doing right (or wrong) but lots of others on Ultras say 8,000 tops on the rear.

Anyway, I'm happy with Dunlops and have no reason to change.

Ran two sets of Dunlops before switching to the 880's the difference was very noticable with a much better ride and much better grip than the Dunlops.  The Dunlops are worthless in the rain while the 880's have a fair amount of grip.  On average the 880's will not get as much wear as the Dunlops because they are made from a softer compund but that is what make thems so great for ridding here in the Georgia mountians!  On my first rear Dunlop I only got 7500 miles on my SEEG and not much more on the second set while I now have almost that many on the 880's with lots of tread left.

The 880's are a whole lot more tire than the Dunlops especially for aggressive driving and lots of twisties.  If you are just riding on the freeways I guess any tire will do.

I ran the ME88s on my 03 Fatboy and liked them much better than the stock Dunlops.   I believe that the stock tires are decent but if you run both tires to 8k miles and you wind up in a tight situation where you need that little extra traction, I would bet on the MEs..

That said, the Dunlop Sprtmax that came with my 06 SE Fatboy is not bad..   I may stick with them

ronayers.com                 got a set of MEs for my 03 Fatboy for under $210  (both tires).

From what I've read about 880's and from their website, the tires like to be run at their maximum pressures of 42F and 50R as stated on the sidewall (especially for 2 up or heavy loads)..

I installed ME880S just before Sturgis and could not believe the difference in the curves. I was comparing them to 18K front and 9K rear on the Dunlops.  I also went to the 140 rear, which is really tite on the 03 but works fine. If you guys are getting over 10K on the rear you must never spin the tire!

Now I know I'm getting old.  I can't imagine ever intentionally burning the tires on the old girl.  I am into laid back cruising, she gets me going as well as I can stand without blue smoke.

But the more youthful offenders are welcome to it, with no discouragement from me! 8-)

Saw a Metzler 880 brochure in the dealership yesterday. They have bagger tires up to 150, with the speed and load ratings. Even has 18" front and rear tires and 3 different 21" front tires. They only had 1 brochure and have ordered more to give out. When I get my hands on one I will try to post all the info.

Nope, don't spin mines. I have gotten an occasional "chirp" out of them, but my tire "smoke out" days are long behind me.

Have started to have issues with the quality of metzlers.  They have change manufacturing plants.  It's my understanding that they are made in Brazil now not in Germany.  I've had a tread seperate on a rear, a bubble form on a front tire and they are not wearing as long.  The one with the seperated tread only had a little over 6,000 mile on it and was down to the tread bars.  I am hard on them but that kind of mileage is unaccepteble IMHO and am going to look at a set of Michelins Commanders.

I ran Metzelers on my old RKC and consistantly ran about 7.5k on the rear tires. I thought they handled better than stock Dunlops.  I am not a very agressive driver and never do burnouts.

I'll probably go with the AVONs or Dunlop E3 before I head up to Nelson this summer.  I've heard some really good thinks about the E3 in terms of handling, wear, and load rating.  The Avons also have a good rating but seem to get the same wear as the Metz's do. In addition  I hear most HD dealers carry them in stock (for those emergency opportunities on the road  ;D )

Would be nice to hear from folks on this forum their experiences with E3 and/or Avons vs. Metz's.
