New HD (Screamin' Eagle) Primary chain tensioner
« on: March 27, 2013, 03:30:00 PM »

 :soapbox:
The following pictures and text are straight from an experienced HD Tech in a position to know the facts...........

"This a way for HD to not admit the 2007 & up primary chain adjuster was not a good idea. for years they tell us to run the primary chain 5/8 to 7/8 cold and 3/8 to 5/8 hot then they give us a adjuster that runs the primary chain banjo string tight.  Then we see inner primary bearings wearing out sooner and comp problems from the chain being to tight. Then they come out with the Screamin' Eagle version so it will be called upgrade not a recall. Bye the way this $150.00 part makes your 2007 & up bike have the same set up as 2006 and earlier bikes."

except i could adjust my 01 without even taking the floor board off - let alone the whole *^&^ floor board bracket. - could adjust without even changing the oil.

baker makes a cover for big bux that has a port. i suppose i could put the case cover on my mill, make a place for a cover and a aluminum billet cover...

however i see that THIS adjuster requires getting in there under the clutch with a allen key.

ill end up making a whole home made billet deal...

*sigh*

one more project that doesnt pay.....

Spring loaded, adjustable?  What's the story?

Spring loaded, adjustable?  What's the story?

Manual adjustment.  The obvious problem of course is the fact that the older bikes had a nice little access cover in the primary cover you could remove to make the simple adjustment without draining the oil or removing the entire outer primary.  This one will require removing the entire outer primary, due to the fact there is no little access cover anymore.  Even if it did have the access cover, the adjustment screw wouldn't be accessible anyway.

It's not terribly surprising that Harley has come out with a part labeled Screamin' Eagle to fix their own mistake.  They did the exact same thing back when the original 2007 compensator design turned out to be a total POS.  They came out with a SE version they would sell to you, but it took them several more years before they finally started installing it in production.  Harley has always preferred to find ways to profit from their mistakes versus admit to them and take care of their customers.  Fine bunch of folks.

Btw, there are alternatives.  If you prefer an automatic adjuster Hayden and SOHB offer either a spring loaded tensioner or a hydraulic tensioner (both have been commented on many times on the site in the past).  If you prefer a manual adjustment, Baker also offers one.  It's not cheap, just like the rest of Baker's stuff, but they sell quality parts.  As we have found over several years, Harley might call something Screamin' Eagle and sell it for a jacked up price but that doesn't mean it's actually any good.  Case in point, the SE version of the compensator, which still sucks.

What a crock!  I have always heard that the auto adjuster made the primary too tight.  Now they have gone back to a manually adjustable one with no access to it!

Thanks for the info Jerry.

So what their saying here is, if you want to convert your touring 110 in to a 100+hp road dragstor, this is the fine tune adjuster you need :nervous:

Buyer be ware it sounds like a load of double talk something Jason from OCC would come up with. It's a real benefit in  those aggressive racing situations,... :nixweiss:

Looks like to me it should be under the high proforments heading not the touring. Unless they praying on,...what they believe to be a lack of intelligence,...well spruce it up that racers use it, and the tourers will be lining up at the door. Just one guys thought

Notice how they went out of their way to describe this new SE tensioner is for "drag racing" applications? That way they can continue to use the POS ratcheting tensioner on all the bikes, and sell you the new one for a buck fifty if you don't like the stock one, with the caveat that it is for racing only, and deny your warranty if anything goes wrong in there while running it. Very sneaky...

Just install the Hayden for a buck, and forget about primary chain tension issues.

Anybody actually try one of these new SE primary chain adjusters? Just had my dealership put one on and when they took it for a test ride they heard a squeak or squeal from the primary when they let off on the throttle... They put the stock one back on, and the noise disappeared! Has anyone else run into this, and is there a way to fix it? (I know Baker, Hayden, etc.)  :nixweiss:

Thanks Sadunbar! Interesting thread. Sounds like either the Hayden or possibly the Baker unit might be the way to go...

I never had a problem with the old EVO manual tensioner.  Too bad they did away with the inspection cover.
