A&S clutch
« on: December 13, 2014, 04:14:58 PM »

I was looking into putting the clutchwiz kit on my wifes new CVO street glide. After reading remarks on this site it sounded like the right way to go. When I removed the derby cover I see that this bike has the A&S clutch. I researched this and found that the 2014 and 2015 CVO and trikes have this new clutch. Clutchwiz makes no parts for this clutch. I have heard that many aftermarket clutch companies are not going to make part for this cluch. They told me that it is not worth making parts for that Harley is having many problems with it and they don't think it will be offered much longer and be scrape. They suggest that I change it it out for the origanal style hyralic clutch that is on the earlier modles. Has anyone else heard any of this? Or have you heard any problems with this clutch? I need to do something to get her an easier pull.

Thanks

Yes the A&S is a item that is designed to reduce shock to the drive train. What we have seen in some cases is the pack wearing out very quicky and its holding power is reduced from the older design.

Joevibe is one bike that comes to mind and he can tell you better than I how he rides. But the packs was junk and it was a stock bike. We have seen this in a few cases. Not all but enough to think twice about adding a larger cam without looking into clutch upgrades.

Easier pull . This is the least costly option that works well.

This is what my A&S clutches looked like at about 4,500 miles.

The real issue is the A&S clutch, so I have no idea why they called out the Touring but forgot about the Breakout.  According to Harley's literature, ALL 2013 CVO's came with the A&S clutch.  The parts catalog for the 2013 CVO Breakout confirms that your bike came with the A&S clutch.

Steve any idea what that compensator is in the AIM cut sheet you posted? Or is it a sold drive sprocket. The pic that shows the entire primary opened up.

Just finished changing out the clutch on my wifes 2015 cvo street glide. What a big differance. I converted back to the origanal style clutch, energy one performance clutch pack and clutch wiz with the 480 spring. She now has a lot less pull on the hand lever and the clutch seems to lock up faster. I don't understand why the MOCO feels that they have to keep putting in cheaper parts and still want 40K for a preformance bike. But I keep buying them and fixing the problems. But now the wife is happy.

I have ridden plenty of 14/15 CVO bikes now and some you can feel them slip under 5 th gear moderate roll on. The bike feels like it is surging.

I've installed a few SDR Slider Clutches from AIM Corp they work great! The Slider Clutch comes with softer springs which gives a lighter clutch lever pull in. The three weights open up at a thousand RPM giving your clutch more clamping force (even more than stock stiffer springs) because higher RPMs makes it a stronger clutch. The Slider is easy to install with only having to remove the derby cover, check out their website.

They were installed in the 2013 CVOs as well.  Did something else change with the 14/15 that is contributing to this or do they also slip in the 13s?

Barnett now sells a clutch kit with heavy duty springs for this clutch.  Any experience with this?  Just wondering if slippage occurring on stock to moderate builds may be fixed by this.

I would like to have a slipper clutch, unfortunately it appears MOCO may have missed the mark on this one.

The same slippage was reported on the 2013 models equipped with the A&S clutch.  It was especially evident when people had dyno tuning performed, even with Stage I bikes but especially with higher output mods.

A properly designed slipper clutch wouldn't be a bad idea, but Harley seldom spends the time and money these days to do a proper anything.  Other brands have been running properly designed slipper clutches for decades, without issues.  Where Harley screwed up was in trying to add the "assist" function to let them reduce the spring pressure and thus the lever effort.  The assist function obviously doesn't work well with the cheap and simple steep ramps built in to the system, as opposed to the moving weights used in the aftermarket system.  So you have too little spring pressure even for the stock output.

So for the folks that have a 13 and up, does the Barnett A&S clutch kit with heavy duty springs solve this issue (for stock to moderate builds) or is the A&S clutch design fatally flawed?

Only the derby cover is removed, with the AIM SDR Slider VP Clutch.
