:'( Hey guys Sandy was a kick in ass for everyone in the NE here. I'm in Brooklyn, SI New drop, and Rockaway areas got hit hard. I guess if you can read and write on this it's not so bad compare to others.
My question is my 09 and 06 where in 3-4 feet of water in the garage, can they be saved? I really don't want to scrap them. The insurance will never give me aha I put in them. Can they pay me top dollar to fix them?
I dont know shiiittt right now :-\ :nixweiss:
I know I have my life and family, but I'm stuck with this trash now.

Having gone thru Katrina, I can tell you they are beyond saving. You have salt water in the engine, inside the exhaust, air filter/fuel injection, etc. Essentially, you'd have to take everything apart, clean, and rebuild. Plus, replace damaged parts. At $100 hr. labor plus parts, you'll spend more than the bike is worth. Even if you could salvage them, you will have corrosion or other problems will surface down the road. After Katrina, insurance companies just totalled out the vehicles that flooded without even trying to repair them. You might want to strip anything off that you could use again. If it helps, I was very depressed about my '03 CVO RK after Katrina, but everything worked out OK. Sorry to hear about your plight. Good luck.

There is a large discussion on Sea Water Damage to motorcycles on Harley Tech Talk (HTT) www.harleytechtalk.org, there are a lot of the guys who are discussing best scenarios. Majority are looking at bike replacement due to the corrosiveness of the Salt Water, affecting electrical connection and getting into the internals of the frame and difficulty of getting all of the water out and ensuing rust problems in the future weakening the frames.

in the Elbe flood of 2002 (http://www.floodsite.net/juniorfloodsite/html/en/student/thingstoknow/geography/elbeflood2002.html) many bikes were drowned, some of them for several days, all officially considered beyond repair and therefore totalled by the insurers. Nevertheless I personally know two brothers who rebuild their Harleys successfully after 2 days entirely under water and those bikes are still on the road. But that was fresh water.

I am an insurance adjust in Florida. I adjust property claims, but i am licensed for all lines. Check with your Carrier, some provide coverage for additional upgrades to motorcycles. I think this endorsement cost me an additional $18 a year!
Some Carriers have a certain amount for extras built into the policy, some let you purchase more. Worth a shot to ask them about any upgrades you added to your bikes. Most will require proof, so you can go back to your HD dealer or wherever you purchased the stuff if you do not keep your receipts.
FYI- I use an app on my Android (available for Iphone too) called Cam scanner light. This app takes a photo and turns it into a PDF, I then upload the PDF to my dropbox account from my phone. I scan EVERY receipt for a purchase so when (not if) I loose the receipt, I still have it to print out later.
This also helps greatly with tax time and "entertainment" deductions. ;)
Good luck up there, I grew up in Northern NJ before moving to Tampa, FL. Hard to believe my old stopping ground was affected by a hurricane before Florida!

As others have said: Salt water or even brackish water = bad juju
As much as it may pain you to let the bikes go it may be for the best.
Salt water gets everywhere... corrosive, and will continue to corrode long after the items are dried out, if they are still operable.

Amen to the above on the effects of salt water. Side note; the next several months is not the time to pick up cheap spare parts on eBay coming out of the Northeast.

I feel for you. I grew up in Brooklyn (Flatbush and Sheepshead Bay). Alot of my friends are still in bad shape there and in SI and LI as you say. Best of luck to you. I agree with others that it is a loss, which hopefully works out fine for you. You are right though, you and your family are all ok. Many others not so lucky. Best of luck

This is a terrific idea to scan all receipts as proof of purchase.

The bigger concern to me is just how many salvage vehicles are going to turn up without salvage titles.

Very sorry to hear of your situation, you and your families health and safety come first and I'm glad your all alright.
The bikes can be replaced, yes I realize the time and effort loss can't but a new adventure awaits you! :2vrolijk_21: ;)

Hated to see what yall had to go thru with Sandy. If it were my bikes I would hope insurance would total them. In most cases you can get more for them on a total than you could trying to sell them. In Louisiana they bring retail in the NADA book. I also have adds in my policy for the extras.

You might want to buy the bikes back at salvage. The typical salvage rate is $.20 on the $1.00, so a $30,000 bike could be bought at salvage for $6,000! The insurance company would issue you a check for $24,000 and release the title as a salvage one. Most Insurance companies LOVE salvage so they get some money back as they are not in the salvage or repair business, so they have no way to recoup any money when they total a bike or car.

Saltwater flood.... if you were going to buy it back, get it running and flip it before all the electronics took a dump, you might make some coin... but youre looking at a bike that would still be nice from a cosmetic standpoint, and not much else. Salt/brackish water in EVERYTHING... 3-4 feet of water would drown even the gauges and radio.
I'd walk away clean... most insurance auctions have been using the 'net to advertise high dollar vehicles to garnish a larger audience... this would be one of them. I saw a new, in crate CVO springer a couple of years ago where the crate had been torched... bike was a mess but looked like it would still run if you changed the seat, controls on the bars, and the upper harness. It sold for $10K with a salvage certificate to someone in the ukraine.

Don't think there is a ton of differences between '11 and '13 RG, I have the '11 Ultra and LOVE it. Best handling Harley I have ridden and with the rear speaker on the tour pack and an addition of the bass tubes, the stereo sound is awesome.
Note though that the handling with stock suspension was not so god. Changed front and rear, got rid of the garbage air shocks and and lowed bike 1". Now she is a turning beast!

Sorry to hear about the bikes bro.... Im from Long Island myself.... used to live in amityville... so BELIEVE me i know exactly how you feel... i hope you did ok otherwise bro... Ive seen what that saltwater does in a matter of just 24 hours... get as much money as you can from the insurance walk away and go new bro.... I was luckily enough to get my chit into storage... I was at Bellmore HD and they have over 60 flood bikes and insurance companies are just writing checks ( was this this by my friend who works service there) just walk away man... when u are looking for a new bike, STAY AWAY from bellmore and the miserable Mile... they are sneaky basterds, just this week trying to trade in 2 bikes for a CVO and they tried screwing me... long story on that but i wish you the best of luck!

The cars are all at West Hampton beach airport were by the rescue Guard unit. From when it happen to now the corrosion has just increased. Like everyone say just let it go. Now to find another CVO, Looking at the Road glide Custom. It's not an ultra, don't have all the toys like a ultra. Any pro's or con's on the road glide

There's a few nice FLTRUSE out there for sale if you want another Ultra. I absolutely love mine. I can't imagine being without another one. Well, As long as I'm married anyway. :huepfenlol2:

Yeah man im a pilot and i fly over Long Island all the time you should see calverton airport you should see all the cars its unreal... as far as the miserable mile, they did highly illegal stuff by forging my name on documents.. it was bad.... but whatever they are all scabs now bellmore is on my list but anyways as far as the road glide, my buddy has one a 2011 road glide ultra, and he loves the thing, it takes getting used to with the shark nose, me personally it looks like a bad ass bike with the removable tour pack etc... he has the 103 motor with 254 cam and rheinhart exhaust... its definitely comfortable but like i said the shark noise (and its dont move) it sure can take some time getting used too..

Yeah, I saw pictures of the full length of cars on the runway. They just got my bike last saturday, sad day. Oh well, it is what it is. That fix fairing is a little different. Do you fly out of FRG? or ISP?
