I took advantage of some down time today and decided to get my GP support installed. Thought I'd share a few thoughts on the install.

First pic is a before shot.........

The manual tells you to check the runout but does not tell you that you'll need to have a 7/8" fine thread nut and a couple of 7/8" washers. (quick trip to the hardware store cause I could not find one from a previuos install). You need to thread the nut onto the crank so you can turn the engine around to check it.

Next a shot checking the crank runout. GP states that normal is .001" - .005" Anything more that .015" and you have problems. Mine was at .0035".

Next a shot of the complete support installed. Also put in the HD auto tensioner since I was in there.

Jim...thanks for the pic of this...the instruction sheet does not show this very well, and this helps me understand that what I'm checking here is basically "wobble"....correct?

I don't have a damn dial indicator though >:(

The instructions also say the comp nut is no longer needed, but I'm assuming you still torque that assembly down per usual?

I did not keep track of time on this one since it was my own. I also had to change out the shifter shaft seal in the tranny and the starter drive seal in the primary as they had a slight leak. The whole job should not take more than 2.5 - 3.5 hours though. (depending on what exhaust you have)

You are checking to see that the crank is running true. You can pick up a dial indicator at Harbor Freight for about $30 on sale. The comp nut is still used and yes it is torqued down as usual. What is no longer used is the compansator itself.
