Start with kits that make ales or stouts.  They are fool proof and build confidence.  The most important part of the whole process is the cleaning and sterilizing of equipment and bottles.  If you have an interest, go to the public library and sign out "The new complete joy of home brewing" by Charlie Papazian.  It's the home brewers bible and was quoted by eagle1 a couple posts ago.  You'll know how much you're into it after reading it.  Good luck.

title sent to spousal library pickup unit - thanks, I can see this spiraling into another expensive hobby with lots of extra stuff to move around now...

269.53 miles, give or take a few feet, to Oneonta, home of Hartwick College.  GH is WAAAAY closer.  What brings you to God's country?

(I had a beer last night, thread is now back on topic.......)

It's not bad after the initial outlay for equipment.  The clone kits are actually quite a bit cheaper than buying an equal amount of the beer that is being cloned.  The hard part is finding enough time for the boil, cool, and pitch step.  I found this taking about 3 hours routinely.  It is a great hobby to have during Monday Night Football with a TV in the kitchen and the kids in bed.

Home brewing could make a cigar habit look cheap Sean, by comparison.....     :nixweiss:

Just out of curiosity, for any/all of you who home brew - Is a Negra Modelo clone easy to brew at home?

OH NO!  I can't find my copy of Clone Brews!  I bought it because it had three recipes for each brand of popular beer around the world.  Once made by extracts (easiest), one with partial mash (harder) and one all grain (hardest).  It had EVERY one I was looking for when I found it in a store.  I'm sure Negra Modelo is in it.

Good luck on finding your book, Jim.  Figured Negra would not be too difficult, but ya never know until you ask.

Most recipes/formulas in the food biz follow their own versions of your beer recipe description: easiest -flavor extracts to mime the flavor,  harder - real product with some extenders for duplicable standardization, and hardest - real deal, only the raw ingredient & a lot of patience to get it right.

Sweet, then I have to do it...and does it have lots of stuff I can accumulate and have to move??  That makes it even MORE like the rest of the hobbies that I have.  Can't be heavier then my gun safe, and scuba tanks, and two motorcycles, and my woodshop - oh and the computers, and all my extra military gear...and the kids.
