DIY Fork Seal Replacement Tools
« on: April 05, 2022, 07:56:02 PM »

I am gonna help my Brother In-law replace the Fork Seals on his 04 Fatboy. It has 41mm fork tubes. I have No problem removing everything to gain access to the 41mm fork tubes.
Can I use a square peice of wood cut in half with a hole in Vise to hold the 41mm fork tubes?
DIY PVC fork seal driver made from PVC?  Brother In-law Money is limited so we're trying to cut cost on tools but we did order Harley Fork Seal kit. I don't have much confidence in the other aftermarket made in China parts. The OEM  Showa i believe is our best bet.
If anyone can give hints on doing this job is appreciated. What type and amount of fork oil should we use in each fork leg? Type E vs a quality 30 weight oil? Thanks Guys

I used a piece of PVC longer than the upper tube & I grounded  the outside diameter of PVE so it would fit inside the seal opening. Then put a small 2x4 on top of PVC as I bumped into place.
It worked for me

That was for the Seal? What about the bushing in the
Lower fork leg? Thanks

If you are talking about Item #34 0r #44 they will slip over the tubes, I did my 2014 Street Glide. The only part that needed anything special was the seals pressed in. you might try an independent  Harley
shop, they could do it all or maybe if you take the forks to them to do all the work or just install the seals for you.
 Good luck

I got the closest conduit with an inside diameter larger than the OD of the fork and cut a slot in one side (along the length) so I could squeeze it to a smaller diameter. Then I taped it with electrical tape. A longer piece is easier to use than a shorter one. I cut mine at about 3 inches long and it was hard to use. I just used my plastic vice jaws and it worked fine. There are some helpful you tube videos!
