2005 License Plate Bulb
« on: July 16, 2022, 10:00:41 AM »

Been away for a bit and am trying to get the bike back on the road.  :jalapeno:
Went for the state inspection and was told it will fail because there is no license plate bulb.
Not sure if a prior owner changed out something on the rear fender or maybe these eyes are just getting older.
But I don't see where it would go.
Looked in the manual and got a part number 53436-97.
Looked at the HD site for the bike and the exploded view makes sense for where it should be but I don't see the same thing on the bike.

Thanks

Hey Steve.  I just looked at the exploded view at Ronnie's online and I don't think it's right.  It's been a long time since I was that intimate with the ass end of my SEEG but I recall it being different.

This pic is my SEEG really early.  I don't think I'd changed anything in the ass end at this point.  The downward shining tag light is built in the signal cross bar.

And....  I used that same cross bar on my Road King when I built it.  Here's a pic I just took look up under.  You'll see two allen screws that hold the little light in place.  I'll dig around a bit more and try to find a part number for just that light.  Look up under yours and see if you see the same thing on your bike.

Ok, a few minutes later and here is more.  If your late is like mine the SEEG parts breakdowns don't look right for 2005; at least not according to my recollection and not relative to the pictures I've got.  The Street Glide started out using that same light and the 2007 exploded view for Street Glide shows what I think you're needing and what matches my Road King's picture.  Attached below the tag light is in the red circle and showed part number 69353-05.

Since thoroughness is next to... well... something I just checked and the light can still be ordered new from Harley.  $16 and some change.  If that's what yours has to change it my recollection is the whole housing comes off the fender.  Unless your hands are just too big that's not a big deal though.  Two bolts hold it to the fender and you can reach up between the tire and fender to get there.  You'll get skinned up just a little and you'll see some quantity of bad words during the effort.  But it's do-able and it's not really that bad.  Good luck :drink: .

Glad to help.  Your inspector was really thorough.  That's a touch catch in daylight.

For what is undoubtedly such a low volume part combined with its age and low price I think I'm ordering one too.  Just to set back with the spares when/if mine eventually dies and the part number has gone obsolete.

All I did was call the local dealership parts counter and ask if it could still be ordered.  Guy said was not obsolete and would take a week to get in.  Wasn't even on backorder.  Price was cheap too.

Just looked and three currently on eBay also.  All asking more than the parts guy said he could order a new one for though.  I'm going to call back in on Monday and buy one (or at least try to).  I promise, if there's only one in the entire parts system and I beat you to it will send it your way!

Just keyed the part number it at Ronnie's and at Surdyke.  Looked good both places.  By the time shipping is included it'll still be cheaper to buy the small part locally though.  Looks like it is still a good part number though.

I replaced a bulb in mine this spring, if you don’t remove the whoLe housing it is some kind of a P.I.T.A. I had to do it by feel and the braille method, because you can’t get the lens out without breaking it, but with a pair of tweezers it can be done. Standard 194 peanut bulb.
Good luck

Good to know there's a little bulb in there.  That wasn't shown separately in the exploded view.  That little lens might be uber brittle after what is now approaching 20 years so for just a few bucks the whole assembly is probably worth doing.  But the little 194 bulbs are available as LEDs so if non-destructive disassembly is possible there's a little more light that could be shed.

Steve here's an image that shows the little 194 bulbs.  So if yours can come out without breaking new bulbs are cheap or you could replace them with LED versions of the same bulb and the replacements would likely outlive us.

I adapted a take off 2012 license plate light bar, and the turn signal lights on my 05' Banana. the light bar is a little narrower compared to the stock 05'. A relative easy job. LED license plate light. :bananarock:

I was unable to remove it from the bracket so far.
I got the 2 screws out but could not get the part to drop down.

I did put it back together and tried a different shop for the inspection.
It passed so I have bought myself another year.

But I am planning to take care of the issue as soon as I can.
I will look for the LED's.

Thanks

Finally got around to installing the bulbs with Neals help.
This is what I put in.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0978Q39RZ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

It was a bit of a challenge.  We had to drop the top shock bolts and lift the frame up.
Barely enough room to sneak my hand in between the tire and the frame. Hit it from the side with an extension and a socket on a swivel.
