A buddy of mine is considering having some work done to his 2012 cvo sg 110.   He is thinking about cams, new push rods and a few other things.  I mentioned lifters and he said that he was told that it's not necessary. The bike has about 30k miles on it. I'm thinking that he should do them.  Am I wrong??  Thanks. Stuart.

You are definitely NOT WRONG Stu.  He's lucky he got 30k miles without a failure, more than a few people had failures at half that mileage.  Perhaps he doesn't know about the CVO110 lifter roller failures.  Let him know how those failures often trashed the engine, requiring a full teardown and rebuild or a new engine.  I'd also suggest, if he's interested in changing cams, that he look for one with less radical opening and closing ramps compared to the stock cam.  That stock cam is a main contributor IMHO to the lifter roller failures.

I second this. Having lost four 110 TC motors due to lifter and cam bearing failure. Two each on an ‘07 and a ‘12. Didn’t fully understand what was going on at the time. Change lifters and go to full compliment Torrington style cam bearings.

These lifters are being made for us and are not open source. They have been in use on harleys since year 2000 and are black oxide finished. All that I have checked are within .0002 of size, .842

  well my  cvo 110  2015 road glide just coming up to 50000  so getting bearings and  lifter done  now  so will see what they like

Show your buddy this picture, Just came out of a 2010 CVO Street glide. All four lifters have hard surface failure, cams are wasted as well. Metal debris through engine. Scoring in oil pump and pinion of crankshaft. This is a full motor rebuild.

Thanks Jim.  He had some work done last week. He did change out the lifters.  His request.  He picked up the bike earlier today.  Said all was well so far. I'll send this along. Thanks. Stuart.

Yes stock lifters, bike has 60k ish on the clock.

That’s a good opinion you have there, what cams would you suggest that have a less severe ramp.
